Johor Kaki was invited to the media preview of Singapore Food Festival 2015 (SFF2015). Since 1994 (that's 21 years ago), the SFF is held annually to celebrate Singapore’s best dishes and culinary talents.
The media preview hosted by Singapore Tourism Board was held at the cool and breezy Singapore Botanic Gardens.
Ms Ranita Sundramoorthy (lady in red) of Singapore Tourism Board said the SFF, “... is the only food festival in Singapore to feature local delights, and at the same time reinterpreting them to showcase the inventive spirit of our ever-evolving local food scene.”
I appreciate the comprehensive, inclusive and progressive vision of the Singapore Food Festival. I am grateful for SFF's active role in preserving Singapore's food heritage and in giving due recognition to our food heroes, be they be in the F & B industry or even in our own family homes.
That sounds good but what's in it for foodies like you and me? ☺
This year's SFF is themed “A Fresh Taste of Tradition”.
SFF2015 revisits Singapore’s food heritage and traditions through a line-up of 13 food events at various locations around the island from 17 July to 2 August.
After months of planning and preparations, let's eat lah!
SIGNATURE EVENT - STREAT
For the first time, Singapore Tourism Board is introducing STREAT as part of SFF, as the anchor event to celebrate Singapore’s local food and culinary talents.
Each year, STREAT will feature a pop-up restaurant headed by a Singapore chef, accompanied by the chef’s personally handpicked selection of homegrown food establishments.
Launching the inaugural STREAT 2015 at Clifford Square (on 24-25 Jul) is internationally-renowned chef, Justin Quek of “Sky on 57”. Chef Justin will elevate the street dining experience through a modern food street combining popular Singapore street food with Mod-Sin (short for Modern Singaporean) cuisine.
At STREAT, we can savour Mod-Sin tapas such as Pacific Oysters in Ginger Flower Dressing from Chef Justin's pop-up restaurant.
Or, indulge in hawker favourites and innovative dishes such as this "dry laksa" from 16 food stalls personally handpicked by Chef Justin.
PARTNER EVENT - HERITAGE PLACES
In conjunction with SFF2015, we can revisit Singapore’s food heritage at three dedicated hawker spots:
“A Wok Down Memory Lane at Ellenborough Market” is part of the Singapore Favourite Food Village 2015 held at Read Bridge at Clarke Quay. Ellenborough Market better known as "Teochew Market", the popular food centre at the old Clarke Quay was famed for it's Teochew cuisine. Sadly, it was destroyed by fire in 1968. Ellenborough Market is recreated for SFF2015 to offer foodies a flashback to yesteryears. Thanks for the memories!
Head over to Chinatown Food Street at Smith Street for a gala dinner of modern street food hosted in a fine dining restaurant-setting.
Swing by the well loved Old Airport Road Food Centre as SFF2015 puts the spotlight on this sprawling unpretentious hawker centre and shares its history.
PARTNER EVENTS - PEOPLE
Rediscover Singapore’s traditional palates through three heritage highlights:
Join Violet Oon’s Living Culinary Treasures cooking workshops, where a line-up of local food mavens will share cherished family recipes and traditions in an effort to preserve Singapore’s culinary heritage.
Tuck into sumptuous and hearty Malay dishes or try your hand at preparing one at AKAR – Social Heritage Kitchen at Singapore Halal Chef Federation's Culinary Art Studio.
Partake in STORIES, an innovative theatrical dinner series by STB Kickstart Fund recipient My Private Chef in collaboration with Sentosa Leisure Group. STORIES pay homage to our food heritage at Fort Siloso at Sentosa.
PARTNER EVENTS - FOOD!
Recapture Singapore’s love of food through events celebrating the past, present and future of the local dining scene:
Participate in Singapore's first-ever Kueh Appreciation Day that commemorates the one delicacy – the sticky cakes that bind our diverse ethnic cultures. (At ToTT Store on 26 Jul.)
Suvai 2015 by the Indian Chefs & Culinary Association will feature our favourite Indian dishes in their well loved traditional forms as well as stretching our palates with modern interpretations.
Chef Bala shared that Suvai 2015 will also attempt to set two Guinness World Records, for the “Largest Amount of Curry Cooked at a Single Time” and the “Largest Cooking Vessel” with a record-breaking 11-metre curry pot.
All the best to Suvai 2015!
Singapore Hawker Feast will gather Singapore's best hawkers at Ngee Ann Civic Plaza on 18-19 Jul.
Singapore Restaurant Month, where 12 heritage restaurants such as Good Chance Popiah reinvent dishes using local produce exclusively for SFF 2015.
