Pasar Kia Laksa Johor Bahru Taman Daya 巴沙仔叻沙 JK1325
Stumbled upon this sharp looking curry laksa while food spotting at Taman Daya in the evening.
The curry laksa came from this little stall that looked like those at Meldrum Walk in downtown Johor Bahru. (The back lane stalls behind Jalan Wong Ah Fook.)
The stall owner Ah Yong used to operate his curry laksa stall at JB's Pasar Kia 巴沙仔 since 1987 until the area was redeveloped to make way for the current CIQ Complex. Ah Yong had to relocate his curry laksa stall in 2004 and finally settled in Taman Daya where he is today.
Mr Yong's curry laksa is the same traditional Johor Bahru style which is loaded with toppings and chopped daun kesum.
There is crispy mildly savoury fried bean curd skin.
Fresh cockles (see hum).
Fried fish balls.
Spongy fried tofu with fish stuffing.
My usual order is yellow noodles and bee hoon in the curry laksa. Yellow noodle because I like it's flavour and texture, and bee hoon because rice vermicelli does the best job of soaking up the curry laksa broth.
The most memorable thing about Mr Yong's curry laksa is his laksa broth. The curry laksa has good medium body - it has a mildly savoury base holding together slightly spicy hot flavours. There is also a slight taste of anchovies and crustacean flavours from dried shrimps. A bit of coconut milk adds a little sweetness to the spiced broth. The curry broth is made with 25 ingredients cooked over alternating slow fire and high heat which Ah Yong mastered over 28 years of running the laksa stall.
I drank up the whole bowl of Ah Yong's curry laksa broth and followed up immediately with a second large bowl which I also finished :-D
->> Great curry laksa broth made by a dedicated hawker.

This is one of the best laksa in JB. Period. It's the same style since ages ago & it's affordable too! Even those fancy expensive laksa served in air-con so-called laksa joints doesn't come close. Paying more doesn't mean u get better stuff. Also, the ikan bakar stall in the same coffee shop is worth a try too. Not the best, but worth trying.
ReplyDeleteYes I am lucky to stumble upon it.

ReplyDeleteI hardly had this kinda southern curry Laksa but those that similar from my previous orders from the same state or down at Sg were more flavorful with the Creamy Santan. The first trial this evening has amazed me, that it's fragrant punch of taste was so herby and indescribable of spices flavors. Its simply marvel, as for the topping, just love the well soaked spongy tauhu stuffed with fish paste.
ReplyDeletePerhaps i was too pampered with those more lux style of creamy curry with meats and seafood, this Laksa Kia is something very down to earth that i have to come again to find out more.
