By Grace Sweet Treats Galaxy Dessert Johor Bahru Pelangi
Here's a little secret for Singapore day trippers on food and shopping trails in JB - you can cool your heels, get WiFi and enjoy this gorgeous dessert for around RM80 for 3 to 4 persons at By Grace Sweet Treats in Taman Pelangi.
By Grace Sweet Treats Dessert Bar is a quaint little dessert shop well known among JB locals for their creative molecular desserts (and occasional private dining sessions).
The decor in By Grace Sweet Treats is eclectic - that's a nice way of saying that the dessert shop is dotted with a "pasar malam" of memorabilia from owners Grace and Gio's travels. The psychedelic coloured, smallish furnishings reminded me of a cheerful kindergarten.
The purplish orangey lighting is quite dim, so it is perfect for dreamy dates over pretty desserts. But, it's a photographer or Instagrammer's nightmare - drop dead gorgeous looking food but too dark to capture it's beauty properly. So, come in early at opening time (5:00pm) to capture By Grace's desserts in it's full technicolor glory.
By Grace's dessert menu is written on the wall. It's actually quite hard for me to make it out in the dim light and there isn't much contrast between the text and background. There are the "explosion" and "molecular" categories. The descriptions are pretty brief and no pictures, so it's quite hard to make up our minds. Fortunately, there is staff Ann to help explain the menu to customers.
My favourite is this platter known as Galaxy (about RM80). Ann helped us choose "explosion" and "molecular" elements for our universe and the owners design our world on a plate for us :-D
The Galaxy is assembled by owners Grace and Gio when we completed our order.
Ann helps customers pick their desserts and also explains the elements in the Galaxy.
There are just too many components in the Galaxy for me to know all of them. There's strawberry sorbet, charcoal crumble, chamomile caviar, osmanthus and other cakes, crumbles, lava, more sorbet, ice cream, more caviars, foam etc which I couldn't recognise in the kaleidoscope.
All I know is that I enjoyed the dazzling mix of sweet and sour flavours, the combination of soft, gritty and nutty textures as well as warm and cold temperatures.
->> When you are on a eating and shopping trail in JB, include the Galaxy at By Grace Sweet Treats in your itinerary :-D It won't be complete without a stop at this uniquely JB dessert shop.
