Three years ago, I stumbled upon this Indian owned street side stall selling nian gao 年糕 at the Chinese New Year bazaar in Taman Johor Jaya (near the Family Food Court). Now, I always get my nian gao here for Chinese New Year.

Today, it is the boss' son Raakesh manning the stall at the Chinese New Year bazaar.

I like this nian gao as it is soft and springy like marshmallow, not overly sweet and it has a nice banana aroma as it is wrapped in toasted banana leaf.

I popped by at the kitchen a stone's throw away at Jalan Bakawali 52 where the nian gao are made. It is interesting to watch Indian and Malay workers making this traditional Chinese New Year customary food.

Mr Bala (right) learnt how to make traditional nian gao when he was working at the once legendary Lau Fatt Kee Confectionery (dissolved in 1996) in Singapore.

Soon after Lau Fatt Kee closed, Bala started making nian gao in Johor Bahru and now supplies his famous sticky rice cakes all over Malaysia and also across the Causeway in Singapore. In this way, Bala keeps the Lau Fatt Kee spirit alive.

We can get the nian gao here at the annual Chinese New Year bazaar at Johor Jaya (just beside the JJ Family Food Court).
