Derek invited us to visit his new restaurant Sugar on Top or SOT in Taman Pelangi. Derek was very excited about his new set up emphasizing innovative Asian fusion cuisine which he observed while studying and working in the UK. We were thrilled by his infectious enthusiasm and quickly made our way to SOT.
When we were at SOT on 17 Jan 2016, there was still not signboard yet :-D SOT was still at the "soft launch" stage.
But, people in the know already found this relaxing cool space through word of mouth, either the old fashioned way or through social media.
Derek was eager to show us the Signature Charcoal Waffle (RM14.90) with one scoop of Ice Cream (RM17.90).
The charcoal waffle and the gelato ice cream were supposed to be the stars of this dish but all I saw was that big syringe :-D
Oh that syringe? It's just a harder way to dribble maple syrup onto the waffle ;-D
But, one bite into the waffle and we know immediately who are the stars on this plate. The waffle was lightly crispy outside and inside it was airy fluffy spongy soft and slightly moist. It has a nice sweet, eggy flavour and fruity aroma.
Totally love it on first bite.
Then that house made vanilla truffle gelato... yeah lah.... I know the "truffle" is synthetic and inspired by the fungus only...
But, I can't deny that it tasted nice :-D
Must. Order. This. Waffle. Period.
Come to JB and order Singapore Chili Crab Pasta? SOT ah?
You better :-D
Because, I doubt you can find such a large serving of chili crab pasta made with real fresh crab meat pulled from the claws and shell sliver by sliver, and served at RM22 back in Singapore.
The spaghetti is done al dente by default. The pasta is completely enveloped by a thick sticky savoury sweet spicy sauce with crab and slight shallot flavours. The confit egg mixed into the mound of pasta added subtle egginess into the dish.
Great for lunch or dinner. Filling even for big guys.
Get this, unless you are allergic to crab.
Mentaiko Burger RM21.90.
Lobster and crab patty. Mayo, Ebiko eggs, cheese and lots of juicy crunch between the buns.
Cappuccino RM9.90.
Simply Hot Chocolate RM8.90.

I don't think I like the idea of having a syringe on my plate..even if it's filled with delicious honey.but everything else looks very good.
ReplyDeleteA lot of things on the menu is not available yet, including mentaiko burger. We had chilli crab pasta, fish & chip & farmer's breakfast. No one like the chili crab pasta, taste a bit like chilli crab but does not match well with pasta. The other two dishes r pretty standard fare. Waffle with ice-cream is about $17 while one scoop of ice-cream cost $9.90 & do note they had only one flavor (earl grey).
ReplyDeleteI just came out from SOT. Big disappointment! If in Feb they only had one flavour left, today they don't have anymore home-made gelato anymore. We had chocolate ice cream with the waffle and it's a rip off since the ice cream is the commercial cheap ones you can buy from supermarket. It's a pity Johor Kaki gets invited to enjoy the best but we always get second class hence conned by such reviews.
ReplyDeleteDear Dandelion, I think you should take it up directly with SOT if you were served commercial ice cream when the menu stated gelato.
DeletePlease do not say you are conned by my review. I stated up front in the post and again reminded you at the end that this was an invited review (which I rarely accept). I agree with you that you are conned by a review when the blogger/ newspaper/ magazine/ TV was invited and hide that important fact from you. In this case, you were clearly informed up front (so you can make the decision to stop reading if you don't trust invited reviews) and I reminded you again at the end of the post, in case you forgot I was invited and you are unwittingly misled. Do come back to Johor Kaki. Nearly all of my posts are fully self paid and there is not even one "food advertorial" in my blog. Tony.
Hye JohorKaki, is this place recommended for Malay?
