Super Mario 釀豆腐 Yong Tau Foo Johor Bahru Taman Gaya Hou Kee 好記 Coffee Shop JK1354
We stumbled upon Super Mario 釀豆腐 Hakka yong tau foo stall during food spotting in Taman Gaya, Johor Bahru. We like the fresh and substantial ingredients 真材实料 as well as the flavourful broth here. The unique chili dip is great too.
Super Mario 釀豆腐 is one of the around 10 stalls inside the busy Hou Kee 好記 coffee shop in Taman Gaya (near the Mydin supermarket).
Besides Super Mario 釀豆腐, there are a few other popular stalls here at Hou Kee 好記 which I shall come back to try next time.
Super Mario 釀豆腐 Yong Tau Foo serves various "dry" and "soup" noodles as well as laksa.
We ordered a simple bowl of kueh teow with minced pork and bean sprouts tossed in a simple blended sauce of dark soy and shallot oil.
What brought us back two days in a row was their 釀豆腐 Yong Tau Foo which are sold as "add ons" at RM1 per piece.
The yong tau foo pieces came soaking in a round bodied broth which had deep layered anchovy savoury sweet flavours. I liked it with the first spoonful.
At Super Mario 釀豆腐, all the yong tau foo pieces are deep fried before serving "dry" or with soup. The vegetable pieces were all slightly soft from the deep frying.
The 真材实料 filling was impressive - it's the traditional Hakka style with minced pork, minced Mackerel fish and ti po (sun dried sole fish 偏鱼). Each yong tau foo piece was slotted with a big generous lump of the savoury sweet stuffing.
Stall owner Ms Leong makes the yong tau foo in small batches at the stall throughout the day (not in one big go). So, you won't see an impressive spread of yong tau foo pieces laid out at the stall - it's nearly made a la minute.
Ms Leong is supported by Ms Nia. They deep fry the yong tau foo pieces in small batches throughout the business day, so customers will only get fresh YTF.
Super Mario 釀豆腐 YTF makes their anchovy and soy bean broth everyday. The broth is made the day before for use the next day. The extra hours of boiling give the broth more body and depth of flavour.
Super Mario 釀豆腐 makes this unique "house blend" of sweet, sour, spicy chili dip that gives a nice lingering gentle burn in the mouth.
->> A good old school Hakka yong tau foo to try when you are in the Taman Gaya area e.g. on your way to Desaru, Mersing or Kota Tinggi.
