Jeff, my JB foodie buddy said that I must try this Penang prawn noodle stall at Jalan Rawa, a quiet inside street off Taman Perling.
Update: Butterworth Boy Prawn Mee has moved to their own shop house at 189, Jalan Rawa in Sep 2020. They are just a few shop lots away from their old coffee shop stall.
北海仔虾面 (roughly translates "Butterworth Boy Prawn Noodle"), is a little corner stall in the Jia Qin corner coffee shop.
Our initial order of a bowl of soup prawn noodles (RM5.50). We normally order just one bowl to taste first as I need time to photograph the food. We can also decide if we would be blogging about the stall based on the first bowl.
The bowl of noodles was loaded with prawns, pork slices, fish cake slices, egg slices, and beautifully presented.
First things, first. And, for Penang prawn mee, it's the prawn soup, of course.
Well, we could already smell the crustacean aroma while photo taking :-D The broth was robust with prawny savoury flavour but just the right amount (and not overly salty). The broth is also only gently spicy, allowing us to spike it up to hotter levels by adding their savoury spicy sambal chili.

The prawn mee came with a couple of these fresh large prawns. Not strictly the little shrimps of traditional Penang Hokkien mee but these prawns were very fresh and flavoursome.
We like the soupy prawn mee so much that we quickly ordered the dry version to taste (RM5.50) :-D
The dry noodles come just with a simple savoury sweet tossing sauce. It's up to us to spike the noodles with their savoury spicy sambal chili. Just ask the friendly lady boss, if you need more sambal chili.
The dry noodles come with a bowl of 北海仔's signature prawn broth with two good size prawns. Same solid broth and tasty fresh prawns.
北海仔虾面 also serves pig intestines, "软骨 soft rib bones" and pig tails which I love to come back for.
Stall holder Mr Lim hails from Butterworth (Penang), hence the stall name 北海仔虾面. Mr Lim worked as a butcher in the UK for 5 years before coming to JB to start his stall last year.
Mr Lim shared that it was really difficult when they first started the stall last year. Business gradually picked up when customers shared about their prawn mee on social media. Mr Lim is glad that his business is now doing much better.
->> Not strictly the traditional Penang prawn mee but the rich prawn broth, fresh prawns and house made spicy sambal chili have earned 北海仔虾面 a quickly growing following. I'll love to be back to try their prawn noodles with pork tail and soft rib add ons.
