Fatty Mee Hoon Kuih House Berkeley Klang's Smoothest Kueh Operator 百家利大肥面粉粿 JK1513
When I was food hunting in Taman Berkerley, the old residential district in Klang has changed beyond recognition. The once laid back enclave is now a thriving food hub popular with locals and KLites.
When I passed by this busy mee hoon kueh shop, I had immediate flashbacks of eating here before. At that time, over a decade ago, it was the best mee hoon kueh that I have tasted then.
Glad that some good things haven't changed at Taman Berkeley, we quickly walked in and grabbed a table at the busy shop.
Of course, we ordered a mee hoon kueh - Fatty's claim to fame.
We also had a noodle version (for variety).
The cloudy broth was light and clean tasting 清清. It is made by boiling dried anchovies (without stock bones or soy beans). The broth here thus tasted less complex than those soup that are made with anchovies plus stock bones and soy beans. But, less is more, if you like your mee hoon kueh broth clean tasting 清.
In the bowl of hot broth, there were fresh pork liver, slices of lean meat, crispy fried anchovies (ikan bilis), crunchy choy sum (leafy greens) and a raw egg dropped into the hot broth.
The noodles were quite thick, cooked tender, slurpy smooth, and clean tasting.
The hand torn kueh is thin, slippery smooth and also clean tasting. I struggled a bit to hold up that slippery kueh for this photo. It slipped back into the bowl several times ;-p
Fatty's dough is hand flattened and stretched wide and thin.
Lady boss, Ms Choo's retired parents opened Fatty Mee Hoon Kuih in 1980. The row of shops was much quieter then. The area have since become a foodie haunt and a Mo Sang Kor outlet, one of the flag bearers of Klang style bak kut teh is located just a few shops away in the same row as Fatty.
The boss busy cooking the freshly hand torn kueh dropped by a line of helpers into the steaming pots of bubbling hot broth.
👍 Fatty Mee Hoon Kuih is very popular with Klang locals and KLites for their smooth kueh and clean tasting soup. It's a non greasy, satisfying, healthful Hokkien comfort meal.
The total bill for all our food and a drink came to RM9.70.
