Mak's Simple Little Bowl of Wantan Noodles at Centrepoint Orchard Road
I was running an errand at Orchard Road this morning and had an hour to spare, so I popped by Mak's Noodles for a snack bowl of their signature wanton noodle.
I haven't been to Mak's at Orchard Road since their opening a year ago. By the looks of it, nothing much has changed. Neat, simple, bright little space with jade coloured trimmings. Soulful Cantonese ballads playing softly in the background. The friendly staff tries to engage you in Cantonese before switching to Mandarin or English depending on the customers` response.
The chopsticks, saucers and tissue paper are tucked in quintessentially Hong Kong mahjong table style drawers.
As I only wanted a snack, Mak's little signature wanton noodle bowl fitted in nicely. The aroma of dried sole fish wafted gently from the tiny bowl of noodles. It really primed me for the delicious duck egg noodles that I am about to enjoy.
The tea coloured watery broth was mildly savoury sweet. It's a very delicious and drinkable broth.
The skinny duck egg noodles had a unique soft light crunchy feel to the bite (in a way which I've not found in Malaysia or Singapore egg noodles yet). There wasn't that pronounced alkaline taste which most Singaporeans are not accustomed to. A hint remains though, if you pay attention. I like the flavour and texture of the noodles.
There were three shrimp dumplings, each with a prawn inside, the size of a lady's little finger.
The wanton skin was rather thick, and the prawns though fresh were just ok, weak in that 鮮蝦 "fresh prawn" taste.
Cheerful Chef Chan from Hong Kong was busy in the open kitchen. He graciously obliged when I requested to have a picture of him in action.
I enjoyed my little snack bowl of Mak's noodles mainly for the flavourful broth followed by the light springy noodles. Though the price at SGD7.50++ is a little steep, Mak's is the only place to get this little treat in Singapore, if you crave for a bowl of wanton noodle like this.

I feel that the noodle is normal, a lot better choice over this, eg. Crystal jade's wanton noodle easily beats this. And Mak's noodle is way too over priced, portion is too little. Just my humble opinion.
