I wanted to show Mark one of my favourite beef noodles in Johor Bahru but was a little disappointed when we arrived at the Din Kee 鼎记牛腩粉 stall in Restoran 101 (kopitiam) in Bukit Indah. Pei Yun, the lady boss was already washing up and closing the stall at 11:00am as they were sold out for day.
喜欢吃牛肉面的朋友们有口福了. 好吃的鼎记牛肉面现在在新山报纸街开了分档. 老板亲自长档. 朋友们不妨试试. 档口在豆腐皇里面.
Pei Yun then mentioned that her husband Ah Koon now runs a branch of Din Kee in Taman Pelangi and it is open till 2:00pm. We quickly turned around and rushed down to Jalan Maju and found Ah Koon at his stall at the coffee shop (just next to Plaza Pelangi).
We ordered this bowl of "dry" beef noodles of "lai fun" topped with chunks of beef, tendon, tripe, some fried peanuts, shreds of preserved vegetable and splashed with Din Kee's signature beefy brown sauce.
Oooohhhh... I joked that I am getting more beefy flavour from my tender juicy piece of beef at Din Kee than I sometimes get from a bite of steak at a steakhouse. Actually, there is quite a bit of truth in that 😋
We opted for lai fun 瀨粉 instead of the usual yellow noodles, bee hoon or kway teow (which are all available). All the noodles were generic factory supplied.
The generic lai fun doesn't have much flavour on it's own, but it has a nice bouncy spring and the flavoursome brown sauce clings to the lai fun well. Mark and I enjoyed these noodles. I also like the nutty taste and aroma when I bite into the peanuts tucked here and there between the slick noodles.
We also had a bowl of beef soup with beef slices, jelly-like tendon and spongy tripe.
The medium bodied broth is savoury sweet with natural beefy flavours complemented by a mild herbal taste.
These thin tender slices of beef pack a surprising amount of beefiness and natural sweetness.
👍One of the best beef noodles in JB and Singapore, now more accessible to people working or living around Taman
