Nasi lemak is an everyday staple in Singapore and Malaysia, but this beautiful nasi lemak at Oktober kopitiam 十月餐室 in Johor Bahru still stopped me in my tracks - it's like a piece of art, isn't it?
This work of art came from this little no name stall at Oktober coffee shop 十月餐室 at the junction Jalan Bakawali 39 and 48 in Johor Bahru.
Kenny who started this stall just two months ago had been working with Seoul Garden in Singapore for 11 years.
Kenny personally does all the cooking at the stall. He does the cooking in small batches with fresh ingredients. As everything we eat is freshly cooked, the wait can be a little long during peak hours.
Our nasi lemak set.
The rice is tender, loose with the right moistness and gentle coconut aroma.
Woohooo... this runny egg tastes as good as it looks. Kenny makes his perfect sunny side ups, one by one. Stir that yellow lava yolk into the coconut rice... wow!
Took a bite out of this golden brown drumstick. The savoury outside has a slight crisp, while the sweet inside is moist and very slightly pink. Nice.
Homemade sambal chili. Mild chili spiciness balanced with anchovy savouriness and onion sweetness.
Our second nasi lemak set with curry chicken.
Fresh chicken cooked in a mildly spicy savoury sweet lemak curry till the skin and flesh is soft like wet bread, well almost. Nice.
Kenny also sells pork chops as sides for his nasi lemak which he will cook only on order. Shall try the pork chops next time.
Mildly spicy sweet sambal petai with shelled prawns.
We had Kenny's signature "Dinosaur egg" 恐龍蛋.
It's an hard boiled egg wrapped in minced pork and biscuit crumbs, then deep fried. (It's a version of the quintessentially English scotch eggs.)
👍 Simple and nice nasi lemak at reasonable prices and with Chinese / British twists - so Malaysia! Our food today costed us RM17 altogether.
