Lim Kee BBQ Chicken Wings at Johor Jaya JB ⭐⭐⭐✱✱
Exasperated after a few calorie wasting meals in a row, I asked JK readers for help for shareable recommendations. Many came to my rescue, Buddy Lionel suggested that I try the BBQ chicken wings stand in Johor Jaya. Thank you Lionel for helping me break the dry spell 🙏😊
Thanks to Lionel's directions, it was easy to spot the BBQ chicken wing stand just outside Restoran Xia Seng which is a kopitiam in Taman Johor Jaya, Jalan Dedap 9.
Stall holder Uncle Lim was busy grilling racks of marinated chicken wings neatly stretched and speared on steel skewers.
Mr Lim's seasoned hands have been grilling chicken wings over charcoal for more than 16 years now.
If anyone thinks that just any body can do a good BBQ, let me tell you, you are so wrong 😁 Don't let your fond memories of your school holiday BBQ sessions fool you. Cooking a good BBQ chicken wing takes a lot of skill. For one, you need to know how to control the temperature.
Don't believe?
I was puzzled when I saw Uncle Lim kept a few pieces of charcoal soaking in a trough of water. We always keep our charcoal as dry as possible, right? When I asked him about it, Uncle Lim explained that wet charcoal is used to control the temperature of the heat - tossing one or two in at the right intervals. So, there is a lot of skill involved that comes only with experience from years of trial and error.
Not anyhow one hor....
I ordered 2 chicken wings at RM3 each (which isn't that cheap by local standards).
But, Uncle Lim refused to accept my payment for the chicken wings and even offered to buy me tea to go with the BBQ wings.
It is heartwarming encounters with generous people like Uncle Lim that powers me to continue my sometimes trying blogging journey 😅
Uncle Lim's BBQ chicken wings are dark golden brown outside with a slight gleaming glaze.
Uncle Lim's BBQ chicken wings are cooked through yet are tender and juicy inside. The skin has a deep savoury flavour. The marination goes deep into the fibres infusing it with a mild savoury sweetness yet we are still able to taste a subtle bit of natural chicky flavour.
Yum yum 😃
Two is obviously not enough but I wanted to save some calories for my next foodspotting (which by the way didn't taste too awesome, so you won't be reading about that one).
While at Xia Seng kopitiam, order a cup of their RM2.20 signature milk tea which is nicely sweet and aromatic.
3-Star If you are around Johor Jaya at night for dinner or supper, do pick up some BBQ chicken wings from Uncle Lim. The wings are lovingly done, tender, juicy and flavourful.
