In Kuala Lumpur, there is a type of popular eatery which locals call tai chow 大炒 which literally means "big fry". Tai chow restaurants are very casual places usually located in residential districts and are popular with families for gatherings. Tai chows are usually minimally furnished, come as you are places where you can saunter in in your shorts, singlet and flip flops - no one will bat an eyelid. (In Singapore, tai chows are known as zhi char 煮炒 which literally means "cook and fry".)

Seng Huat is probably the most famous of the few hundred bak kut teh shops in Klang, the BKT capital of Malaysia. We got up early and arrived at the old shop in Klang at 7:00am ahead of the big weekend crowds from Kuala Lumpur 😄

Teck Teh Bak Kut Teh in Klang • Oldest Bak Kut Teh in Town • A Living Museum 德地肉骨茶

Got up at the crack of dawn and went to Klang this morning to continue our bak kut teh exploration. Kedai Makanan Teck Teh was our second BKT stop this morning. I like Teck Teh's shop a lot because it is so rustic and quaint. The whole experience feels so hyperlocal authentic, from the BKT, rickety old shop, the regular customers, the sound of Hokkien banter and even the nonchalant style of the boss  😃

Famous Lan Je Steamed Tilapia in Rawang 兰姐清蒸非洲鱼

Finally, I got to try the famous Lan Je steamed tilapia fish in Rawang, north of Kuala Lumpur. Lan Je's steamed tilapia shop was founded here in Rawang in 1978. On the popularity of just one dish - steamed tilapia - Lan Je now has 13 branches all over Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh.

You know, Anthony Bourdian once said that char kway teow is the "tastiest ugly mess". I am not sure if CKT or charcoal grilled char siew is uglier 😄 But, to me, the uglier the char siew, the better it tastes 😋

It was alternating between raining cats and dogs, and light drizzle when we got into Kuala Lumpur today. We were just in time to join the lunch crowd at the famous Anuar Fish Head Curry stall at Lucky Garden in Bangsar. It's also known as Bangsar Fish Head Corner. (Pardon the rain drops on my camera lens 😂 )

Yesterday, while at Pacific Mall in Batu Pahat, we bumped into Johor Kaki reader, Dr Kevin Khoo. Needless to say, I won't pass up a golden opportunity to ask a home town boy about the best eats in Batu Pahat. Hearing that we are on the hunt for great asam pedas, Kevin suggested that we check out the row of asam pedas stalls at Jalan Hamidon, off Jalan Rahmat near the Main Post Office.

I have long wanted to taste the asam pedas fish at Mak Limah in Batu Pahat since I started my blog 4 years ago (in 2012). I kept missing this asam pedas fish because I always arrived at the shop at the wrong time. Today, I am so glad that I finally have the chance to taste this legendary asam pedas and oh... man... it exceeded my expectations even though it was heightened by long anticipation.
