When you wander around KL's Petaling Street during the morning till mid-afternoon, you are likely to stumble upon Mdm Tang's muah chee push cart stall.
Mdm Tang's little push cart is strategically located near the Hong Leong Bank branch at the junction of Jalan Petaling and Jalan Hang Lekir.
Sixty years making and selling muah chee ้บป่, Mdm Tang is a celebrity hawker. She has been featured in numerous newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, blogs, websites and social media locally and overseas. There were at least four muah chee stalls in KL's Chinatown - Mdm Tang's stall is the sole survivor now.
Mdm Tang makes the steamed glutinous rice balls ้บป่ and the toasted crushed peanuts herself.
She is extremely deft with that blade and tong, cutting and tossing the muah chee to coat it evenly with sugar and crushed peanut.
Mdm Tang sells her muah chee ้บป่ at RM5 a box serving.
Muah chee is really quite a common sweet street snack at the markets of Malaysia and Singapore (as well as Taiwan). Mdm Tang's muah chee differs from the rest in that the tender rice ball is just slightly denser, firmer, more chewy, less starchy/ sticky and less sugary sweet. We can eat lots of it unknowingly because we do not get bored with it quickly.
Furthermore, in addition to the original flavour, Mdm Tang created pandan, black sesame, roselle (commonly referred to as Ribena), mango, and lychee flavour muah chee. For RM5, Mdm Tang will put assorted flavours in your box ๐ (varies from day to day).
๐ While exploring Petaling Street, get something that has history, local character, tasty and you can carry with you as you wander in and out of crowded lanes and dingy back streets. The flavours of Mdm Tang's muah chee ้บป่ will be a part of your sweet memories of KL's Chinatown.
