The Old Spaghetti Factory in Toronto at The Esplanade is a family type restaurant that will please the kids and still fill some adults like me with awe, wonder and happiness.
The Old Spaghetti Factory is an American chain based in Portland, Oregon and it has outlets throughout the USA, Canada, and in Japan since it was founded in 1969.
The Old Spaghetti Factory outlets are like a little wonderland that draws you in and grabs your wide eyed attention the moment you step in.
There is something that catches your eye anywhere your eyes turn.
The Old Spaghetti Factory outlets are often set in re-purposed old warehouses. There is plenty of warm colours from time weathered red bricks and dark hardwood. This outlet in downtown Toronto was in its previous life, the blacksmith shop belonging to Samuel Stockwell.
The centrepiece at Old Spaghetti Factory outlets is often an old streetcar replica with seats inside. The streetcars evoke a sense of nostalgia in adults and it is fun for children.
Then, there is always a horsie carousel which never fails to lift the spirits of young and old alike. The mood is always cheerful and upbeat.
The restaurant is chock a block with whimsical memorabilia.
If you are looking for a quiet, romantic couple date, try to avoid holidays and weekends as this place is usually packed with happy children and families during peak hours.
The Old Spaghetti Factory is connected to the Amsterdam Bicycle Club - both are in the same building and separated by just a wooden door.
Amsterdam Bicycle Club is a popular place for craft beers and cocktails. It is packed on hockey or baseball nights as the Toronto SkyDome (Rogers Centre) and Air Canada Centre (hockey arena) are just around the corner.
A penny-farthing, the grandfather of the modern day bicycle hangs from the ceiling at Amsterdam Bicycle Club.
There is no escape from memories or things past - this old telephone exchange switchboard guards the way to the washrooms ๐ My generation is the last to see this contraption in operation ๐ Yes, when we requested a number, a telephone operator had to physically pull and push those plugs to get you your required connection ๐
We finally settled down to the food - we had the classic Spaghetti with Meat Sauce.
The pasta was overdone, so it was limp and lifeless. The tomato and ground beef sauce was just average tasting with mild savoury-sweet flavours.
Spaghetti with White Clam Sauce. We had our pasta dusted with cheddar cheese shavings.
Each meal comes with bread, salad or soup, ice cream, coffee or tea. All of average quality.
This was no Italian fine dining but it was still of acceptable fast food type standard. This is fun dining - and, there is always a place and time for fun dining in our lives.
The portions are generous - 3 of us shared two pastas and it was plenty. Prices are very reasonable. Our total bill came to CDN40 with taxes included.
Our service staff was warm and professional which added to our enjoyment during our time at The Old Spaghetti Factory.
๐ I love this place. Though the spaghetti was just average tasting, we had a lot of fun because of the amazing set up and decor. If I am a Torontonian, this Old Spaghetti Factory outlet would be one of the places that I would proudly entertain my guests from out of town at. I think they will go home with fond memories of the experience.
After lunch, it is just a 10 minute walk to the picturesque Toronto Harbourfront by Lake Ontario.
