Today, I got a chance to try Maple Yip Seafood restaurant's famous glutinous rice chicken or lo mai kai ็ณฏ็ฑณ้. Thanks to our friends Ben and Kiin for taking us to their family favourite.
Maple Yip Seafood restaurant is a family friendly Chinese restaurant in the Toronto suburb of Scarborough. It has been here for a long time and has a large loyal, local, multi-generational following.
Maple Yip's lo mai gai is not exactly the familiar glutinous rice dish as we know it. I had lots of lo mai gai but never like this before.
It is a whole chicken deboned and the cavity packed tightly with glutinous rice and other ingredients. The bird is then deep fried to a golden brown crisp outside.
While the chicken has a nice crisp outside, the meat inside was tender and juicy. It has a tasty mildly savoury-salty flavour.
The glutinous rice was savoury-sweet with added flavour and aroma from diced lup cheong (savoury Cantonese waxed sausage). It was neither mushy nor lumpy though the rice was sticky (as glutinous rice should be). It was also not greasy.
Maple Yip's lo mai gai is indeed a delicious dish worth a special trip for when you are in Toronto.
Besides the famous lo mai gai, the other dishes we had were also good.
Pork Belly with Preserved Vegetables ๆข ่ๆฃ่. It's tenderly soft braised pork belly served on a bed of preserved vegetables and savoury braising stock.
Beef stir fried in savoury sauce and served on a bed of blanched broccoli in a bowl made with fried taro (yam) strips.
่่่ฑ่ Fresh leafy greens lightly stir fried with diced garlic.
The steamed Winter Melon Soup was another highlight of our sumptuous and scrumptious lunch. The soup had delicate layers of gentle natural sweetness from fresh shrimp, diced pork, shitake mushrooms, dried scallops and juicy winter melon flesh etc. We had seconds until all the delicate tasting delicious soup in the large melon was gone.
๐ Maple Yip is a good restaurant to visit for their signature lo mai gai and winter melon. The other dishes from their extensive menu are delicious too.
Maple Yip is very popular and it is best to make reservations and pre-order. Their telephone is (416) 297-1438.
