I've heard about Ah Mah's bak kut teh at Sun Coffee in Ulu Tiram for a while but this morning was the first time I managed to get to taste it ๐ You see, Ah Mah only cooks one (yes, 1 only) pot of bak kut teh on Sunday and it usually sells out before 10am ๐

Sun Coffee is a favourite haunt of Ulu Tiram locals. It is always packed in the morning.
Sun Coffee is popular for their kopi and is especially famous for their sambal chili which is used in their toasts and nasi lemak.
Mr Foo founded Sun Coffee over 60 years ago. Now, his grandson runs the coffee shop. Mr Foo is still at the coffee shop chatting with customers. He knows everybody here and so started a conversation with me asking politely, "Where are you from"?. It's old school hospitality. The owner wants to know every customer personally.
Mr Foo's wife, Mdm Tan has been making just one pot of bak kut teh every Sunday for customers for the past 20 years.
I always missed it as it is usually sold out before 10am. To make sure that I got my Ah Mah's bak kut teh this time, I arrived at Sun Coffee before 8am ๐
Of course, we can sit at the main dining hall or at the foyer to enjoy our coffee and bak kut teh - but, they also have two tables in the kitchen. Where do you think I chose to sit? ๐
Bak kut teh with kopi kau - no Chinese tea? What kind of bak kut teh blasphemy is that? ๐ฑ
Ah Mah's bak kut teh is served in a small ceramic bowl with soup and three pieces of pork. This costs RM9.50.
The broth is tea coloured and light. Not greasy. Just a bit of tiny oil globules floating on the surface.
The main flavour is mild savouriness with a bit of subtle sweetness, herbalness and garlic taste.
The rib bone meat was tender and juicy, and it still had a spring when we bit into it. The pork was fresh and we can taste the pork's natural sweetness complemented by the mildly savoury herbal broth.
My favourite cut is the pig tail as there is springy skin, soft spongy fat, and tender juicy meat. I also prefer fat because it is sweeter than lean meat ๐ฑ
I ordered another bowl of pig's tail because Ah Mah still have mah ๐
Ah Mah dug deep into her pot and managed to find two pieces of pig tail for me ๐
๐ Why do I recommend Ah Mah's bak kut teh at Sun Coffee? Because, the pork is fresh and it is lovingly cooked just right by Ah Mah. The texture is good and the flavour is simple and nice. I am happy to see Ah Mah enjoy herself and love to share a table and chat with Ah Kong.
