So nice to be back in JB after three months away overseas. First things first, a Nanyang style breakfast to get my bearings. Outside of Malaysia and Singapore, there is just no breakfast like these anywhere else in the world.
The usual busy morning breakfast scene at Kin Hua kopitiam right at the entrance to Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, JB's culture street. Kin Hua is always packed and there are always people waiting for any available table. But, turn over is fast and service has improved as they have more staff now. Not much creature comforts, it's just a no frills fast paced eat, drink and go place. It is actually quite hot outside once the sun is up. But, hey... it doesn't deter anyone who loves unique Nanyang style kopitiams.
Boss Mr Tian was busy at work pulling teh (tea) and brewing Hylam kopi with a sock (the old way).
This is Kin Hua's classic Hylam kopi-O.
It's thick and dark (unlike those watery kopi that look more like dirty tea but taste like ash water). You will sniff a toasty coffee aroma when you hold the cup near your nose. The coffee tastes bitter with hints of saltiness and a slight acidic tang. A bit of sugar makes the bitter brew
I love soft boiled egg. Especially, kampung (free range) chicken eggs.
Here we eat our soft boiled eggs with a dribble of light soy sauce.
And a puff of white pepper.
We stir the eggs, light soy sauce and pepper together. Most people will eat their soft boil eggs with a tea spoon.
Me... . I slurp the soft boiled egg straight from the bowl like a thick soup ๐
Generic farm raised chicken eggs may often be watery and tasteless. But, with kampung chicken eggs, the rich yellow yolk and ivory white have good full body and the eggy flavour is strong.
Yums.
It's heavenly.
A soft toasted bun completes my breakfast triad.
The fluffy browned bun is slathered with sweet kaya (coconut jam) and envelopes a small square of savoury chilled butter.
Savoury sweet always works for our local palates.
๐ My simple Nanyang kopitiam breakfast. So simple, so satisfying. Kin Hua is one of the best places in JB to enjoy this unique lifestyle the old way.
(Everything here for RM6.50.)
