I am food hunting around Bukit Indah and thanks to Kin Na's sharing, I have the chance to taste another good Chinese style roti prata in JB.

This roti prata stall is in a coffee shop at Jalan Indah 28/1 known as Chef Prata and Noodle House 厨师小食馆. The prata stall's signboard says 華人煎餅 which translates literally "Chinese Fried Biscuit".

Ah Teong is the boss of Chef Prata stall. Ah Teong was sous chef of Straits Cafe at Rendezvous Hotel in Singapore before moving back to hometown JB in 2013 to start Chef Prata.

Chef Prata have since built a strong following especially among Bukit Indah residents.

One of the draws of Chef Prata is the wide variety of prata which Ah Teong serves - there are 20! There are traditional pratas for oldies like me and updated versions like chocolate, ham, chicken floss and even Oreo for the young and young at heart. I suggest browsing this menu before visiting Chef Prata 😄

As I am not sure if I am young at heart or just old, I had a kosong (plain) and a cheese prata 😄

Ah Teong crumbles the prata by sharply clapping the bread between his palms while it is still piping hot.

I like this prata kosong as the bread is thin, light, well browned and crispy. It has a nice mild savoury sweet flavour and it is not greasy.

The cheese prata which is very popular with the younger set is filled with mozzarella and cheddar cheese. The cheese were melded together inside the thin dough envelope.

The cheese prata is stiffer than the kosong - the melded cheese makes the prata less fluffy. The flavour was a little flat, leaning heavily on the salty side. It is also quite greasy from melted fat from the cheese.

For round two, I again had something traditional (prata with onion) and something modern (chocolate prata!).

I like Chef Prata's onion prata because the bread is thin and crisp, slightly moist from onion juice. The flavour is mildly savoury complemented with natural sweetness from the onion. I love the fresh onion's crunch too!

How thin is Chef Prata's roti? It is thiner than tissue paper, no kidding 😂

Ah Teong spreads the dough thin and wide like a fine silk veil.

Chocolate prata, a children's favourite.

The crispy roti was moist inside with melted chocolate. It was mildly sweet savoury, not overly sweet at all.

I like Chef Prata's dipping curry as it is flavourful and aromatic from the many spices. I also like the mild lingering sting of the chili.

Chef Prata and Noodle House's signboard is a little weathered, and so, not so easily spotted from the road. The coffee shop is located between Restoran Golden Recipe and Cawan Mas.

  3. Your phone must be good (which one are you using?) because the closeup photos are sharp. I agree that your food blogs are fantastic - managed to find a few makan shops as I travel through Malaysia. Thank you Johor Kaki. You are my Food Bible.
