I am glad my golfing days are long over - I never enjoyed it. The ponds seemed to have magnets that suck my golf balls in, swallow and eat them like popcorns. The greens seemed to be protected by invisible force fields that prevent my balls from going near.
In the middle of obligatory games under the blazing sun, my constant thought was always "when is this going to be over ๐" But, I did enjoy the icy beers and makan times with golf kakis at the club house and golf terrace ๐
Famished and thirsty after 5
But, bonding time at the golf terrace made all these just minor inconveniences. Over local delights, teh tarik and ice cold beer, trading golf stories much like fishing kakis about "the big one that got away", I forgot how bad my game was ๐
Most golf terraces are opened to the public - you don't need to be a club member to enjoy a meal and drink here. This is Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club in Nusajaya, Johor Bahru.
Head Chef Samsul is a 17 year veteran - he was with HHGCC golf terrace in the early years, ventured to KL and was just recalled to head the golf terrace kitchen. Samsul still serves the original signatures that made the golf terrace popular with members and locals, while he introduces new dishes from his KL sojourn.
I started with a Thai Mango Salad (non member price RM14.50++). Appetising crunchy strips of unripe mango tossed in a sour, spicy, savoury, sweet sauce studded with toasted peanuts. I like it that the complex sauce is well balanced. Neither, the sauce nor the unripe mango have that biting sourness that makes me cringe.
One of the most popular dishes at the Horizon Hills golf terrace is Cucur Udang or Prawn Fritters. It's thin strips of yam, carrot, onion, long beans, and prawns battered and deep fried.
Buried invisible in the tangle of crispy deep fried yam, carrot, long beans etc, were a few good size shelled prawns.
The prawn fritters are eaten with a Thai style sweet sourish spicy dip, plain mayonnaise or spicy mayonnaise.
This cucur udang is nice. It's perfect beer food.
Chef Samsul kindly made me a more photogenic (not for sale) version ๐
I like this Mamak Tulang Rawan Soup. (Non member price RM15.50++)
The thick creamy soup has robust intense spice flavours and aroma. Carrots, celery, and potatoes etc add a bit of sweetness to the soup. It's wonderfully delicious, eating toast bread saturated with the beefy spicy soup. A bit greasy but it's worth dying a little for.
There were several thick meaty juicy chunks of tender beefy Australian beef. I am still burping the spices as I write this post. Love it.
Nice spicy al dente spaghetti with tender chewy feel to the bite. I enjoyed this as most spaghetti in JB are done too soft for my liking. (This spicy spaghetti is not yet on the menu. It's one of the new dishes the golf terrace is introducing. Other spaghetti like Bolognaise and Carbonara are available now.)
I like this house made chocolate cake. Dense, moist, well balanced gentle sweet, bitter, buttery flavours. Not overly sweet at all.
Fresh mixed fruit platter. It feels great to enjoy fresh fruits while gazing out at the rolling greens.
Bartender Ego makes a good frothy teh tarik popular with golfers. Good black (Lipton) tea aroma and not overly sweet.
Icha, Assistant F & B manager at Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club.
๐ I will be back at Horizon Hills Golf & Country Club golf terrace for their delicious Cucur Udang, Mamak Tulang Rawan Soup, teh terik and discover other dishes like their famous ox tail soup etc.

Piece of advice. Instead of "The ponds seemed to have magnets that suck my balls in", please use "The ponds seemed to have magnets that suck my golf balls in".
ReplyDeleteSo many nice Austin Heights restaurants you haven't tried yet e.g. Sulawesi Cuisine, Boss Lee Kitchen...
