Every year for a month after Hari Raya Aidilfitri, lemang stalls appear along road sides throughout Malaysia.
This popular stand in Johor Bahru is located along Jalan Persiaran Tanjung near the junction with Jalan Denai Utama in Tampoi.
I love lemang. It is often enjoyed with rendang (spiced beef or chicken) and serunding (spicy chicken or beef floss) but it is already delicious on it's own. It is a versatile rice dish that goes well with many food.
The glutinous rice is tender but still have a slight firmness to the bite. It has sweetness from the rice and coconut milk with a slight saltiness. There is a subtle aroma from banana leaf, bamboo and even a bit of smokey taste. It is quite greasy from the coconut milk. Yummy.
The lemang are freshly made, right here by the road side.
Banana leaf is rolled and slotted into the hollow of bamboo stems.
Glutinous rice is poured into the banana leaf lined bamboo stems.
Fresh coconut milk with salt is poured into the rice filled bamboo stems.
Piling wood, getting ready to grill the lemang with wood fire.
Starting the fire.
It takes 3 hours to cook the lemang with open fire. The bamboo stems are turned regularly to face the flames.
๐ Do give lemang a try. It is a beautiful tradition and oh.... so... delicious ๐

hi morning, writing in from office again hence the lack of identity :)
ReplyDeleteCurious to know why this only appear for a month after hari raya?
The ingredients mentioned seem to be common stuff that is available throughout the year. Is there some religious or cultural significance behind it?
maybe some other readers who happen to be aware can also educate me.
many thanks in advance.
