We met for dinner at the spanking new Moonlight Cake House outlet in Bandar Seri Alam in Masai, Johor (opened in Jun 2017).
Stepping into Moonlight's newest outlet, we were greeted by a pretty flower wall with Moonlight Cake House's familiar emblem - the JB homegrown brand now has 11 outlets in Johor and Kuala Lumpur.
Walking pass the flower wall, we were face to face with three beautiful cake chillers. As the brand name states, Moonlight Cake House started as a cake shop (in Taman Gaya in Johor Bahru).
Moonlight became a household name in Johor with their innovative, beautiful cakes at competitive prices.
Walking upstairs, there is a huge, bright dining hall. Beautiful hard wood flooring, sturdy tables and well padded chairs. The space is beautifully set up.
There is a large full length window wall on one side. During the day, light floods into the big space.
"A party without a cake is just a meeting". So true.
Moonlight Cake House have long gone beyond great cakes. They have put in a lot of effort in savoury dishes and drinks.
Anak Johor Chef Simon who just returned to his hometown after 6 years in Marriott Hotel in Singapore now runs Moonlight's kitchen in Seri Alam.
We started with a Nicoise Salad (price RM16.80++).
Crunchy Romaine lettuce, boiled long beans, onion, cubes of boiled potatoes, egg, cherry tomatoes and canned tuna tossed in olive oil, lemon juice and honey dressing.
Mushroom Soup in French Puff (price RM14.90++).
Creamy blend of shiitake and shimeji mushrooms with garlic served in a house made French puff bowl. We all love this.
Moonlight Sharing Platter (price RM45.90++).
Garlic butter grilled tiger prawns, sous vide chicken breast, crisp fish fillet, and mussels.
BBQ Chicken Chop Sandwich (price RM15.70++).
Tender juicy grilled chicken chop marinated with house blended savoury sweet BBQ sauce created by Chef Simon. Served between toasted house made buns. Set includes a simple salad and a heap of fried criss cross potato chips. We love this dish.
Beef Bacon Asparagus (price RM18.90++).
Sticks of crunchy sweet green asparagus wrapped with savoury beef bacon. Served with salty bonito shavings.
Piccata Chicken Breast (price RM22.60).
Pan fried Parmesan cheese flavoured breaded chicken breast served with mozzarella cheese and creamy yellow mustard. Set includes shimeji mushroom, asparagus, baby carrot and mashed potato.
Braised Lamb Rack (price RM52.10++).
Australian lamb shank sous vide for 28 hours till tender. The meat is fall-off-the-bone tender, juicy and have a nice mild lamb gamey flavour. Served with spaghetti with tomato sauce. The pasta is done soft, which is the local preference. Garnished with asparagus and rosemary. We love this lamb shank.
Grilled Norwegian Salmon (price RM40.70++).
Grilled slabs of salmon served with mango sauce, mashed potato, shimeji mushroom, cherry tomato and broccoli. Choice of tomato or butter white sauce also available.
Seafood Gnocchi (RM20.90++).
Homemade spongy potato gnocchi served with mussel, prawn, tomato sauce and parmesan cheese.
Seafood Risotto (price RM23.90++).
I love this risotto made with rice from Italy. I was delighted by the interesting feel to the bite - each grain is soft outside with a slightly crisp core. Served with thick tomato sauce, tiger prawn, mussel and garnished with shaved Parmesan cheese.
The crowd favourite - Salted Egg with Chicken Floss Fried Rice (price RM15.90++).
Must try.
Rice fried with salted egg yolk sauce served with fried chicken chop and chicken floss. The rice is fried to a slight nutty crisp, enveloped with a mild salted egg savoury sweetness with spicy accents (from chili). The chicken chop is tender and juicy. The sweet savoury chicken floss added sweetness to the dish.
Yammaey.
Stir Fried Ramen (price RM16.90++)
The fried noodles have nice "wok hei" - a subtle smokey taste and aroma from noodles seared in high heat.
We wrapped up our dinner with Moonlight's signature Musang King Durian Cake (price RM99++ for small).
It's a lot of cream blended with real mao shan wang durian. Very sweet. Interesting novelty, especially when durian is off season ๐
Moonlight have a wide range of interesting and fancy drinks in their menu.
I just stick to real fruit juices and this nice cappuccino (price RM9.90++).
After dinner, we browsed Moonlight's famous range of cakes and pastries.
๐ Beautiful family friendly environment at Moonlight Cake House in Seri Alam. Wide ranging menu of savouries, cakes and drinks. There is something for everyone. My personal favourites are the seafood risotto and salted egg fried rice. Pricing is competitive. This is a nice place to hang out, especially for groups.
