Doubletree by Hilton Johor Bahru Executive Chef Jaffery invited me try out their Grilled Tomahawk steak which is available from now till Sept 2017 at the hotel's Tosca Trattoria Italiana.

Tosca Trattoria Italiana is a well appointed space, elegant, intimate yet casual. The furnishings are comfortable and the lighting put us in a relaxed mood.

Tosca is popular for their pastas and pizzas, and from Jul to Sep the trattoria is offering grilled Tomahawk steaks.

Tosca's Tomahawk steak is a grass fed Australian Black Angus bone-in ribeye. This huge 2-inch thick marbled steak weighs about 1.5 kilos and costs around RM500. It was enough to feed four of us - 2 guys and 2 ladies.

The tomahawk is, of course, named after the legendary American Indian battle axe. The steak is cut from the fore rib with the entire rib bone intact. The long bone is French trimmed i.e. bone shaved clean, creating the signature tomahawk look.

Chef Zaki grilled the steak over flames and red hot embers. The steak was simply seasoned with smoked paprika, sea salt and black pepper.

I like simply seasoned steaks as I love to taste the meat's natural beefy flavours. I can smell the smokey beefiness already while snapping this picture ๐Ÿ˜„

After resting the freshly grilled tomahawk for 5 minutes, Chef Zaki's razor sharp blade glided through the beef like it was butter, revealing the beautifully vivid pink inside.

The Tomahawk steak is served with caramelised lemon, carrot, potatoes, pumpkin, tomatoes and garlic. There were also black pepper sauce, mushroom sauce and honey mustard on the side. (I didn't use any of the sauces as I prefer to eat my beef neat.)

The thick tomahawk steak was nicely done medium rare - Chef Zaki did a great job as the steak was consistently done despite its 2-inch thickness. The slab was rosy pink and moist inside while outside it was hot seared to a nice caramelised brown, sealing in the juices and flavours.

The beef is tender and moist with a slight chew to the bite.

The pink flesh tasted naturally sweet with a slight beefiness. You will enjoy this if you like slight beefiness. Personally, I like more pronounced beefiness ๐Ÿ˜„ On the outside, there was a nice smokey taste from the caramelisation and slight char at the edges.

I especially love the fats as they are extra juicy and beefy ๐Ÿ˜‹ The slightly different tastes of each portion means that there is something for every beef lover in this huge steak.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Doubletree Tosca's Tomahawk steak is a real treat for beef lovers. Good quality Australian Black Angus ribeye, expertly grilled and enjoyed in a beautiful ambiance. Pricing is reasonable, starting at RM399 nett for a tomahawk big enough for 2-3 persons. Available till Sep, Chef Jaffery told me that it has been sold out every night.
