Kaiyi's Kitchen, a Vietnamese hawker stall in Golden Mile Hawker Centre in Singapore serves a nice Banh Mi, the Vietnamese staple (available only on Fridays at the moment).

Stall holder Nikki Ha hails from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam and came to our sunny island 5 years ago with her Singaporean hubby. This year, Nikki started Kaiyi's Kitchen serving Vietnamese style wanton mee and chicken with sticky rice (and various other additional dishes on different days). The "additional" dish on Fridays is freshly assembled Banh Mi - Vietnamese style sandwich.

Nikki's banh mi is a light crispy Vietnamese style baguette wrapping crunchy sticks of fresh cucumber, sweet sour Vietnamese pickles, shreds of savoury sweet chicken, spicy hot chili, sweet mayonnaise, Nikki's savoury fish sauce blend and stalks of fresh cilantro.

The crust of Vietnamese baguette is extra crispy because it is made with a blend of rice and wheat flour (unlike the original wheat only French version which is more chewy).

In the mouth, Nikki's banh mi is an interesting blend of textures and flavours. It's a nice light balanced meal or appetising snack in a small package. Each banh mi costs SGD5.50.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Along with Pho (beef noodle soup), Banh Mi is one of Vietnam's most iconic dishes. If you crave for this very likeable sandwich, you can get a good authentic version at Kaiyi's Kitchen at Golden Mile Food Centre by a Vietnam born and raised stall holder. While here, you can also check out Nikki's other Vietnamese dishes like wanton mee, chicken with sticky rice, curry chicken and more.

  1. Tony - didn't know rice flour is blended in with the wheat flour to make the Banh Mi(Baguette) light and crusty.Every time I have one here at Vung Tau the crusty flakes end up on the floor if I am not carefuly.

    Lucky me, it only cost VND15,000 ( SGD 0.90 ) for the Banh Mi Sandwich. A plain Banh Mi will cost VND2,500(SGD 0.15)

    Well rentals are high at food court in Singapore hence the commensurating prices.

    Vung Tau where I am based is famous for the origin of Banh Khot( Prawn Fritters ). If you havem't savour it, you will have to seek around the Vietnamese Restaurants at Taman Sentosa JB
