Anyone who has been to Taiwan knows that braised pork rice (lu rou fan ๆปท่้ฅญ) and beef noodles (niu rou mian ็่้บต) are found everywhere on the island. They're staple and comfort food like chicken rice in Singapore and nasi lemak in Malaysia.
Quite a few people told me that they must have lu rou fan every day when they visit Taiwan. Funny thing is, for all the times that I have been to Taiwan, I have never tasted their lu rou fan and niu rou mian before - always enticed away to try the more trendy stuff ๐
Buddy Thomas who owns Mae Sa Long Thai restaurant near Sutera Mall recently expanded his menu to include Taiwanese cuisine, invited me for a tasting. He is in the process of extending his restaurant to include a section named Taiphoon Formosa Cuisine.
So, if you come here for Taiwanese food but stepped into a Thai themed restaurant - don't panic, you've come to the right place ๐
Thomas' wife who hails from Taiwan prepares the Taiwanese dishes with the help of the kitchen staff. The Taiwanese menu includes dumplings, rice dishes and noodles. I opted for lu rou fan and niu rou mian because I have never tasted these iconic Taiwanese dishes before ๐
Taiwanese beef noodle or niu rou mian (price RM12.90).
The chunks of beef brisket are stewed in low heat with fried bean paste sauce till marshmallow tender. The main flavour is quite robust savouriness from the bean paste with underlying beefiness from the juicy beef brisket. The beef brisket is tender with nice gelatinous softness from visceral connective tissue.
The soup tastes mainly of the fermented bean paste sauce.
Taiwanese niu rou mian is eaten with thick, heavy wheat noodles. It is tender and has a nice mouthfeel. Taiphoon Formosa Cuisine makes their own wheat noodles, at the shop.
Lu Rou Fan (price RM6.90).
It's simple braised pork, braised egg, and some greens eaten with boiled rice.
Pork belly with meat and fat is minced and then braised in soy sauce till tender. On its own, the braised pork is quite robustly savoury, but when folded and mixed with the plain boiled white rice, it tastes of well balanced savoury sweetness.
Blanched fresh greens and braised egg complete the simple but satisfying dish.
๐ If you crave for homely, simple Taiwanese lu rou fan or niu rou mian in JB, you can get it here made by a Taiwanese mum at Taiphoon Formosa Cuisine / Mae Sa Long restaurant near Sutera Mall.
