So, you are in Penang and is a little jaded with same old tourist fare and don't have time to get out of Georgetown. Here's one place locals have kept under the tourist radar.
Goh Chew kopitiam 五洲茶室 is at Lorong Baru (New Lane), off Jalan MacAlister. It has a stall serving luxury edition fried bee hoon and yellow noodles with sea bass, large prawns and an awesome sambal chili.
Mr 鐘's father started this fried bee hoon stall over 50 years ago. Over the years, from to customer feedback, the humble staple evolved to today's luxury edition (which has its detractors as fresh seafood has gotten more expensive).
The bee hoon and yellow noodles are stir fried and allowed to simmer in a blend of dark soya sauce. And, .......
Lard...! Like that win already lor... or lose, depending on whether you are a fan of lard or not 😂
Fresh sea bass cut into chunks and marinated with soya sauce at the stall. (Sometimes, the stall closes when there is no fresh fish or prawn supply 😂 )
The large prawns and chunks of sea bass are marinated and battered.
The battered sea bass and prawns are deep fried to a golden brown crisp outside.
Goh Chew is a popular hangout with locals. Didn't notice any tourists this morning.
Our breakfast / brunch 😄
The bee hoon and yellow noodles were cooked till tender and well infused with mild savouriness from soya sauce, lard and a bit of sweetness from the vegetables. A simple, basic comfort dish which many people enjoy on its own without anything else. Some may find it flat and bland tasting. This is a braised dish, so there is no wok hei.
The deep fried sea bass has a mild savoury flavour outside on the crispy batter. The moist tender flesh inside has the subtle sweetness of fresh fish.
Juicy succulent sweet sea prawns. The whole prawn, crispy outside and tenderly moist inside can be eaten - shell, head, tail and all 😄 If you like to eat it this way lah.... I do 😄 I like these fried prawns.
The most memorable part of this meal apart from the whole local rustic experience is this sambal chilli.
The hot chili and spices are moderated with loads of onions, shallots, sweet vegetables, lemon grass, curry leaves and other aromatics etc in the mix. So, in the mouth we taste complex natural sweetness with underlying mild spiciness. Greasy, especially when cold.
Up till now, Mr 鐘 still gives away the sambal chili free of charge as they have done for decades. But, do come early as I heard that they run out very fast (as expected).
👉 Try out the luxury fried bee hoon / noodle with prawns and sea bass at Goh Chew kopitiam 五洲茶室, if you like to join locals for breakfast in Penang.
Friend's treat but I understand that it is relatively expensive for kopitiam food. About RM20 per person if sharing prawns and sea bass fish with noodles.
