I just had lunch at the newest SDS outlet on level one of JB's latest and biggest shopping centre - Paradigm Mall in Skudai has 500 shops spread over seven levels.
SDS cafe is well furnished for casual dining, which is perfect for a family and friends day out for shopping in the sprawling mall.
SDS is a JB homegrown brand that came a long way from its humble roots as a mom and pop type, shop lot bakery in Masai, Johor back in 1987. SDS now has 26 outlets in Johor and expansion plans beyond their home state are in the pipeline.
SDS' huge menu ๐ It has the full range of Western, Asian, local delights, cakes and desserts, juices, shakes, smoothies, coffee and teas. There is something for everyone. There is even a kids' menu created specially for the little ones, served in their own set of customised "too cute" cutlery.
We started with a Satay Grilled Chicken Chop (price RM17.90++) because I love chicken chops ๐
I like this chicken chop as the huge slab of chicken was meaty, tender and juicy. The satay marinade sauce is mild with spicy sweetness and nice spice aroma.
Button Mushroom Crispy Chicken Chop (price RM17.90++).
Same big, thick, meaty, juicy slab of chicken. This time encased in a crispy gritty mildly savoury tasting crust. The juicy flesh shielded from the hot oil during deep frying retained a bit of its natural sweetness.
I like the button mushroom sauce as it was thick and had a nice savoury sweetness from the mushrooms, vegetables and herbs.
I like it that SDS serves big potato wedges with their Button Mushroom Crispy Chicken Chop. The potato wedges (from Washington state) come with skin on. The potatoes were the "powdery" kind and they turn rich and creamy upon chewing.
Alice had this Grilled Salmon Fillet.
Its a huge meaty piece of fish sitting on a heap of fried potato wedges. The whole dish was presented with flourish and flare.
For dessert, we started with Golden Kesutera with Gelato (price RM12.90++). SDS has a range of house made gelato flavours - I chose sourish strawberry to go with my sweet Kesutera.
The rich buttery eggy sweet sponge cake went well with the sourish sweet strawberry gelato. The cheese and honey topping on the Kesutera gave the cake a savoury balance. The house made Strawberry gelato was creamy and smooth, and its bright sourish flavour added a refreshing zest to the dessert.
If you love pastries and gelato, I highly recommend this Summer Danish. At RM10.90++, I think it is a steal.
It's a flaky, buttery sweet Danish pastry braid topped with a single scoop of gelato (I chose Belgian chocolate) served with kiwi and mango.
I like the Belgian chocolate gelato a lot as it was so rich, with deep bitter sweet chocolate flavour, and it felt so smooth and creamy. The smooth gelato is a perfect match with the flaky Danish pastry braid.
SDS serves a good coffee that paired well the sweet desserts and ice cream.
The double shot Cafe Vergnano espresso (price RM7.90++) had good crema, strong coffee aroma and a robust deep coffee flavour. It's a floral Arabica bean given a bitter Robusta kick. It suits my taste buds brought up on Nanyang Robusta kopi.
After a scrumptious meal, it's back to shopping ๐ But, not before checking out SDS' extensive range of colourful cakes, pastries and breads.
๐ SDS Cafe is an attractive dining option when shopping in Paradigm Mall. SDS' extensive menu has practically everyone's preferences covered. Besides lunch and dinner, SDS' offer of desserts and beverages fills in nicely in the breaks between bouts of shopping.
