Famous Olde Yorke Fish & Chips @ Leaside. One of Toronto's Best

Famous Olde Yorke Fish & Chips @ Leaside. One of Toronto's Best

Gotta have another fish & chips before heading home to Singapore. We picked Olde Yorke in Leaside because we needed spices from the Indian spice shops in nearby Thorncliffe, so we can kill two birds with one stone ๐Ÿ˜„

Olde Yorke Fish & Chips is inside a house along Laird Drive directly opposite Leaside Village mall. Peter and Anne Feathers opened Olde Yorke in 1992 after running 3 fish & chips shops in England for 30 years. Olde Yorke is run by the second generation now. For years, Olde Yorke is mentioned in every list of Toronto's best fish & chips. (Source: Leaside Life.)

Inside, Olde Yorke sports the vintage English pub look with high bar stools, booth seats as well as regular tables and chairs - all sturdy and comfortably well padded.

Olde Yorke offers daily lunch specials (except Sundays) - today, it was calamari and fries, so we ordered that (CDN9.50++).

We like the golden brown batter which was crumby crisp, subtly grainy and gently savoury. The calamari (squid) rings inside were tender with a soft spring which we like but flavour was lacking. There was none of the delicate taste of fresh squid ๐Ÿ˜ž

The calamari was okay when we ate it zest up with seafood cocktail sauce and tartar sauce. Next time, we shall order their onion rings to enjoy the nice batter -  can't go wrong with such good batter ๐Ÿ˜œ

We enjoyed the house cut fries as they were thick, crisp outside and inside they were tender with a melty mash feel. I like its savoury sweetish taste and that it was not overly greasy.

We had a piece of cod fish (price CDN9.65++).

We love that golden brown colour on the outside. There was practically no excess grease.

The batter was at the right thickness for me and it had a lovely light crisp ๐Ÿ‘ The white meat inside was tender, light, flaky and juicy with a mild natural fresh cod fish sweetness. It's great.

We also had a piece of halibut, my favourite fish for fish and chips (price CDN14++).

Same golden brown crispy batter outside. Olde Yorke is really a master in this art.

The halibut meat was denser than cod and was moist rather than juicy. It was tenderly flaky and had a subtly squeaky mouth feel to the bite. The meat had mild sweetness reminding me of the taste of crab meat. So good!

Recommended for you ๐Ÿ‘ If you are a fish & chips fan in Toronto, this got to be on your eat list. Between cod and halibut, the former offers better value for money unless the taste of halibut is a must for you.
