Eating in restaurants in Singapore and Malaysia, I occasionally come across crockery and tableware by Claytan. I am sure many of you have too. I have a good impression of Claytan products and associate it with fine china. Thanks to buddy Lim JP, I came to Claytan Ceramics Factory Store in Ayer Hitam, Johor for the first time.
Claytan Fine China (Tableware) is at 57th Mile, Jalan Johor, Ayer Hitam. It is not far from downtown Ayer Hitam. From its humble beginnings over a century ago making floor tiles and cups for rubber trees (to collect latex), Claytan is today the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) for many prestigious fine china brands from around the world. They also have a wide range of fine house brand products from tableware, crockery to sanitary china.
The easiest way to get here is by Waze navigation app. Claytan is about 80+ km from downtown Johor Bahru.
My first time at Claytan, what really fascinated me was this large makeshift, zinc roofed shed on the right side of the fine china sales centre.
This is Claytan Ceramics Factory's reject store. Defective crockery and tableware are sold here at huge discounts.
Browsing the huge selection of factory rejects I spotted these beautiful plates.
They were made for Spode ® Woodland © Horse Standardbred series. Spode ® is a premier brand of pottery and homeware founded in England in 1770.
If you can accept blemished tableware, you can get a Spode ® plate for RM6.90.
Truth be told, for most of the reject pieces, my untrained eye couldn't spot the blemish even with a full minute of close inspection. As a world class, trusted OEM, Claytan have very stringent standards of quality control - only perfect pieces are delivered to their clients. For me, I am quite happy to get a 95% - 98% perfect piece of fine china at 80% - 90% discount 😄

I am always attracted to rustic, homely themes for crockery and tableware.
Reject Churchill plates for RM13.90 a piece. Churchill China established in 1795 is another top name in fine china from England.
I really love these plates with charming designs.

Stock available changes almost daily depending on Claytan's OEM contracts. Sometimes, one may be lucky and other times you may not find anything to your taste.
