Putu Bambu Juriah in Ayer Hitam, Johor

I've heard about the popular Putu Bambu Juriah in Ayer Hitam. So, when I spotted this huge banner on my way to Claytan Tableware Factory Store, I quickly pulled over to check out the famous putu bambu as it is one of my favourite traditional Malay snacks.



The putu bambu are freshly made by steaming right there at the shop.




Putu bambu is made of rice flour flavoured with pandan leaves, gula Melaka, and eaten with grated coconut. The rice flour and gula Melaka (palm sugar) are packed into a short bamboo stem and cooked by steaming.



When the rice cake with gula Melaka are cooked, they are pushed out of the bamboo stem with a wooden stick into a tray of freshly grated coconut pulp. The sweet rice cakes are then rolled in the grated coconut which will stick to the sides of the cake.



The putu bambu are then packed into small plastic boxes.



Each packet of putu bambu costs RM4 and there are 6 pieces inside.



We love this freshly made putu bambu. The snack was warm to the touch. The rice flour was soft and light, and had a subtle pandan sweetness and aroma. They are generous with the gula Melaka yet the snack was not overly sweet. The lightly salted grated coconut added another layer of sweetness with a slight balancing saltiness. Oh... everything was oh... so fresh. We enjoyed eating this putu bambu.



You can take away the putu bambu or eat it there at the shop which also serves staples like nasi campur, nasi Arab etc. Putu bambu and teh terik are a perfect match.
