Yap Ki Street KL Style Wanton Mee @ Permas Jaya Johor Bahru

I came to the wanton mee stall at Yap Ki Street kopitiam in Permas Jaya after seeing Jason Lee's Facebook posts on drool worthy char siew crowning a mound of egg noodles.

The wanton mee stall is one of several stalls inside Yap Ki Street kopitiam. The WTM stall which doesn't have its own name, is owned and run by the owners of Yap Ki Street.

The black knobby stubby short pieces of char siew don't look one bit appetising, which I know from experience is a good sign 馃構

They have just black or white wanton mee. I asked for black sauce and extra fatty cut char siew. This set for RM8.

The egg noodles supplied by Yap Kee were done soft al dente - I prefer them to be slightly firmer, more crunchy. The black sauce was savoury sweet with a bit of underlying lard flavour and aroma.

Eating wanton mee in Johor and Singapore where the char siew is often like an afterthought, having Kuala Lumpur style char siew on it is always a treat.

Yap Ki's fat cut char siew is soft and moist like marshmallow. In fact, it tasted sweet like toasted marshmallow except for the quite robust savoury counterbalance. The well caramelised sugar outside felt a little tacky to the teeth. Truth be told, it is on the flat sweet-savoury side. Eaten with egg noodles enveloped with savoury-sweet sauce, it is quite interesting but I felt the black sauce and char siew were fighting for attention. I asked for sambal chili to try and tune it to my taste, but there was none. Nevertheless, overall, it's still a quite nice KL wanton mee.

Not quite satisfied and since I had some tummy space to spare, I ordered the white version next. This time I did not ask for more char siew nor the fatty cut (price RM6).

Same soft al dente doneness, I like the lard and mild chili sauce blend enveloping the noodles. Between black and white, I prefer this version here.

I didn't ask for the fat cut, but the char siew still came with a nice fat to meat ratio. It still tasted sweet savoury but it was stiffer to the bite. Like a gummy candy but not a marshmallow.

Nice simple old school anchovy soup and smooth, soft wanton. The small knob of minced pork inside was marinated with sesame oil and a bit of white pepper the old way.
