As a wanton mee lover, seeing posts on Fortune Pot 福鼎记, a new wanton mee joint in Taman Mount Austin popping up in social media, I can't wait to check it out 😋
I like the casual cafe style ambiance and air con comfort of this neat little place.
They have various flavours for sauces such as JB original, Pontian, Thai Tom Yam etc. Since this was my first visit, I opted for JB original. The staff will ask if you would like less, medium or extra spicy. I chose medium spicy.
The set came with noodles, char siew, a bowl of soup with wantons and choy sum greens. I like the quality and feel of the pretty, traditional ceramic "rooster bowls" 公雞碗.
I asked for large and I am glad that I did. Eating wanton mee for me is first and foremost about the egg noodles, so I am glad that Fortune Pot's noodles were worth the extra calories and carbs.
The noodles were done tender al dente with a nice springy bounce to the bite. The tender crunchy texture reminded me of noodles from Chin Chin (but, I am not sure if they are related).
The sauce though quite mild had a good well balanced blend of savoury, sweet, spicy, lardy, eggy flavours. I've heard it said that their sauce was too mild but if it was any more robust it would mask the subtle egg flavours. But, it's true that the noodles would be nicer, if there was a bit more aroma.
The noodles were spiked with pork lard cracklings but they weren't very crispy this morning.
The char siew were sous vided and finished in a charcoal grill to sear and char the outside. Fortune Pot's pork belly cut had the higher fat to lean meat ratio which I like. With these, it's already a win over most wanton mee places in Johor Bahru.
But, the char siew were sliced too thin for my liking and it was slightly overly candy sweet (overwhelming the underlying mild savoury layer).
I had both the pork filled wanton and also the pork & shrimp one. Both were large and generously packed with fresh minced pork / prawn. Nice natural sweetness with savoury seasoning. Sesame seed flavour was missing though.
The cloudy soup was mildly savoury sweet, so I can still taste the choy sum's green flavour in the soup.
Guess how many roosters are there in the picture? 🐓
Information for you 👉 One of the nicest ambiance of wanton mee joints in Johor Bahru. I like the quality of the egg noodles and that is the most important thing about wanton mee to me. The original sauce needs a bit more distinctive flavour/ aroma to make it more memorable. Come and try this brand new WTM joint in Johor Bahru.
Prices slightly higher than at kopitiam, but reasonable for the ambiance, serving portion and quality bowls etc.
