Song Fa Bak Kut Teh has 13 outlets (and counting) in Singapore and really doesn't need any further introduction. Song Fa serves the peppery style of Singapore Teochew bak kut teh. I like their mild, well balanced flavours and consistency across their outlets.
Guests from overseas always ask to taste Singapore bak kut teh. Song Fa is one of my preferred choices to bring foreign guests as they can be relied upon to showcase Singapore bak kut teh in the best light, anytime, any day.
We met for lunch at Song Fa Bak Kut Teh's Suntec City branch. It was full house and there was a short queue of people waiting outside for a table.
The space is bright, compact, the decor is simple but neat, clean and comfortable. I like that familiar mural of Song Fa Bak Kut Teh push cart stall and old Singapore street scene, reminding everyone of the roots of the dish they are enjoying.
The meat was fall-off-the-bone tender with a subtle squeaky bite which I like. The meat infused the likeable signature gentle savoury peppery flavours from the soup.
Song Fa serves many side dishes to go with their signature bak kut teh. We had this meat & prawn roll or ngoh hiang (price $8.50++).
Get it! The crisp beautifully browned roll was packed with 5-spice seasoned soft minced pork and prawn inside. I bit into many little tender bits of prawn which were oh... so tasty!
Claypot Spicy Double Mushroom (price $5.90++). Mushrooms sautรฉed in a savoury sauce. Spongy crunchy sweet mushrooms always work well with savoury sauce. A bit of chili pepper garnish add a little spicy heat to the dish. Nice.

ReplyDeleteWhen I first enter the work force after seemingly graduated in the arena of bak kut teh the go to name was Ng Ah Sio. Song Fa came much later to me .
ReplyDeleteSong Fa has far surpassed Ng Ah Sio and Founders in the last decade. Song Fa has consistently provide excellent service, full menu, good quality and great overall dining experience. The other two have excuses upon excuses on every visit. From “ran out of xxx” to “no supply/stock today” to “no one has any complain about it” in uncomfortable environments. Dun even wana mention others. Sticking with Song Fa now.
ReplyDeleteI remember BKT in Johor have a sweeter flavour and the tang gui fragrance is also stronger. I need to try again ๐๐๐
