Song Fa, one of Singapore's top bak kut teh brands just opened a kway chap and braised duck shop in Northshore Plaza 1 in Ponggol. From the heart of the city serving peppery Teochew bak kut teh, Song Fa now ventured to the heartlands serving other traditional Teochew icons in a modern, comfortable environment. Braised offal and duck - Ponggol residents are responding warmly to it.
Northshore Plaza 1 is conveniently at the doorstep of Samudera LRT station which in turn is connected to Ponggol MRT station.
Song Fa is a trusted brand in Singapore bak kut teh, so I guess many people are eager to try their kway chap and braised duck. (I am a fan of Song Fa's bak kut teh too - I like the taste of their peppery pork rib soup and their ability to deliver quality consistently across their many outlets.)
Play with my phone camera zoom while waiting for our food 😂 The kitchen layout looked like a typical hawker centre stall.
Buddy tapped on the ordering panel, swiped his card and not long after, various dishes showed up at our table 😄
We had a lot of things - braised intestines, pork belly, tofu, groundnuts, etc. The offal were very well cleaned, too well cleaned in my opinion 😜 The offal and pork belly were braised till soft-tender, slightly softer than I like. The braising sauce was mildly savoury herbal, a little too mild for me. But, looking at the crowd, this is the texture and taste profile preferred by today's demographics. Softer, milder.
The kway chap skin was braised till soft-tender and infused with mild savoury herbal flavours. A little too soft for my liking as I like my pork skin to have a bit of springy chew to the bite.
I like Song Fa's braised duck. The meat was tender and juicy. The flavours mostly from the thick sauce was savoury with a bit of balancing herbalness and sweetness. It's a hybrid Teochew-Hokkien style of sauce.
Claypot Spicy Ribs with a sauce that was nicely robustly savoury spicy from chili pepper and julienned ginger. Price $9.90.
Claypot spinach soup with century egg and salted egg. Familiar homely vegetable soup dish with layered flavours from three types of eggs - fresh egg drop, savoury century egg and salty salted egg. Inexpensive at $6.50.
Kway with the usual dark savoury herbal sauce. The kway was smooth and soft-tender with a subtle firm bite.
Many people were here to try out the unique combination of kway with Song Fa's signature peppery bak kut teh soup. It was peppery, sweetened with a bit of minced pork. It's an interesting way to eat traditional kway (rice sheet).
They have a savoury yam rice option. Go for it, if you are a mushroom or yam lover as they are generous with both mushroom and yam in the rice.
With Song Fa Kway Chap, Ponggol residents visiting Northshore Plaza now have more food options than the usual Western fast food chains. The environment at Song Fa is clean and comfortable. Prices are affordable (reasonable premium over hawker centre prices). Suitable for family outings and small gatherings. They also have one pax sets starting at $6.
Right next to Song Fa is a Downstairs_SG Cafe which is a local coffee shop type concept also by Song Fa. Another Downstairs_SG Cafe outlet at Suntec City 👈 click
