On our way from Pontianak to Singkawang, we dropped by Fa Jie Seafood at Batu Payung Beach (near Singkawang).

Fa Jie was the hyperlocal beach type of seafood eatery which I like.

The large shed looked makeshift, set directly on the sandy beach.

The eatery looked out west to the setting sun over the Natuna Sea.

We used the golden hour to shoot some photos.

When the sun was over the horizon, we got back to the serious business of dinner 😅

There's crab, lobster, fish, squid, prawn, chicken, vegetables, soup, etc.

Our orders were grilled over charcoal embers right there next to our table or cooked in the kitchen at the back.

West Kalimantan is well known for Hakka cuisine, and we had choi pan (dressed with fried garlic) for appetiser.

You all are very hungry meh? 🤔

When told that lobsters cost Rp500k or SG$39 a kilo, I wondered aloud that we may be getting mantis prawns.

So, I was pleasantly surprised that we got live claw-less spiny lobsters (same species as lobsters in Pengerang, Johor which I prefer over Maine lobsters for their more delicate flavours).

The lobsters halved, were lightly battered and deep fried. Lost some of their delicate natural flavours due to deep frying but the meaty flesh was still firm crunchy and sweet.

Next time, I shall request for steam cooked.

Stir-fried sayur pakis or fiddlehead. Fleshy, juicy, crunchy stir-fried with a savoury sauce - I love this vegetable.

Sayur genjer (yellow velvet leaf) stir-fried with savoury oyster sauce. First time eating this vegetable, genjer is a weed found in paddy fields and swamps. I like fleshy juicy crunchy sweet vegetables, so yeah, I love genjer too 😋

I love grilled squid.

The squids were slathered with a savoury sweet sauce, then grilled over charcoal embers till the sauce was caramelised.

Served cut into rings. Slightly overdone, so a bit chewy and dry though still tender spongy. Savoury sweet with underlying fresh squid taste.

Next time, I shall try out the asam manis preparation.

Grilled sea bass fish.

I wanted grilled stingray but got sea bass instead (perhaps a mis-comm).

They actually have stingray which is my favourite when grilling fish in Nusantara (Indonesia and Malaysia).

Anyway, the sea bass turned out quite nice - the soft juicy flesh was sweet with a subtle, almost imperceptible earthiness. Savoury sauce balanced the fish's sweetness.

I like the atmosphere here - sandy beachside, soft sound of rolling waves, setting sun, cool sea breeze, casual informal, literally down-to-earth sand setting.

Live and fresh quality ingredients, simple adequate preparations though not stellar cooking.

Prices were budget friendly.
