| 大橋頭米糕 Daqiaotou Tube Rice | No. 41號, Section 3, Yanping N Rd, Datong District, Taipei City, Taiwan 103 🚅 10 minute walk from Daqiaotou 大橋頭 station ☎ +88 62 2594 4685 ⏰ 7am - 4pm (Tues off) |
Roaming around the Datong area of Taipei, we stumbled upon 大橋頭老牌筒仔米糕 serving steamed "tube rice" with braised pork and soup with fishball, pork blood, oysters, etc. When traveling, I like to experience local staples and so decided to give this little shop a try.
The kitchen and service counter were out in front. Make your orders, pay up and proceed to find your seats.
The shop do not encourage taking seats (choping) before ordering.
Long narrow space inside with basic but comfortable furnishings. Clean and well kept. Quite typical of simple, hyperlocal eateries in Taiwan. Moderately busy this morning with nice breakfast vibes.
Menu was on the wall. I forgot to take a picture 😬
We didn't order too many things as this was our first stop of our daybreak to midnight food trail 😅🤭
I like it that everything was cooked at the shop, so they were all steamy or piping hot, and tasted fresh. Yeah, simple, humble staples but made and served with palpable pride.
The steamed sweet glutinous rice was tender firm nutty and well infused with savoury stock and lard, so making a delicious savoury sweet blend.
The melt-in-the-mouth, naturally sweet fresh pork belly braised in soy sauce added its porcine sweet and savoury sauce flavours to complete the well loved humble icon.
Daqiaotou steam their tube rice in plastic tubs which is the normal method nowadays in Taiwan. The old traditional way uses metal tubs.
We also had the lean pork version. Personally, I much prefer it with the fatty pork belly 🤭
双拼 Pork blood curd & oyster combo soup with chives, slivers of ginger and preserved vegetable.
The pork soup with pork blood curd and oysters. Ah.... perfect pairing with the steamed rice cake.
Taiwanese eat a lot of oysters, most if not all locally farmed. So, they are plump, succulent, and fresh at ordinary eateries and even street side push cart stalls.
Enjoying the natural umami sweetness of the creamy fat oyster, there's nothing more I need to add in words 😄
Pork blood curd. Savoury moderately smooth custard.
Next time, I would like to add pork liver which I expect to be nice too. They also have pork stomach but I am not a pig stomach person.
Love the firm yet tender and juicy chewy pork ball, rich with porcine sweetness.
Fuzhou style fishball with minced pork filling. Nice with the best of both fish and pork worlds in every bite.
Their signature savoury spicy chili and preserved radish (chai poh) relish which we can buy in bottles.
They also have a watery sweet spicy sauce.
Very happy and enjoyed our starting meal of today's Taipei food trail, learning about the city and its people through her best food.
