Mohd Chan Chinese Muslim Restaurant is a chain with many outlets in Peninsula Malaysia. Our host brought us to the Mohd Chan outlet in Ipoh.
I like the facade of the Ipoh restaurant which is a repurposed old cinema.
The restaurant was founded by the late Dato Haji Mohd Chan in 2007. Mohd Chan serves Cantonese cuisine with Southeast Asian influences and is certified Halal.
There are now at least 18 Mohd Chan restaurants in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Klang, Putrajaya, Seremban, Ipoh, Melaka, Kuantan, etc (and hopefully in Johor Bahru one day soon).
At the Ipoh outlet, the cinema and movie theme continues inside the restaurant. Nice family vibes. Cheerful atmosphere with a touch of glamour, wonder, anticipation, all the emotions associated with movie night (when going to the movies was still a thing).
Through his restaurants, Dato Haji Mohd Chan spread the message that eating together is a bonding and memory making experience.
That's what I thought too in creating this Johor Kaki blog and that could be why the warm, cosy, familial vibes of Mohd Chan Restaurant resonate with me.
These were the dishes we ate.
Ikan Goreng Sweet & Sour (deep fried Siakap or sea bass fish).
Sizzling Seafood Kapitan (squid, mussel in spicy savoury sweet sauce).
Daging Beef Pepper (tender beef deeply infused with peppery savoury toasty flavour).
Thai Chicken Chop in tangy spicy sweet sauce.
Beef Kailan Taufu (leafy greens in savoury salty sauce with fried tofu).
We enjoyed ourselves. The quality of ingredients and cooking was good. Dishes were well executed. Flavours were robust but not overpowering, and were well balanced. The service crew was excellent too. Very helpful and friendly.
If I am looking for Halal Chinese cuisine in a comfortable setting, Mohd Chan is one brand I would consider highly.
When I revisit Mohd Chan, I want to try their wok hei type dishes like stir fried beef hor fun (rice noodle), etc.
