Ji Ji Noodle House really doesn't need any more introduction. The wanton noodle stall has been in the Hong Lim area since 1965 and in the Singapore Michelin Guide since its inaugural edition in 2016.

But, I must still give my take on it mah 🤭 My personal record of a Singapore wanton mee stalwart, a true Singapore hawker with over 60 years behind it.

As a Cantonese Ah Seng, wanton mee the Cantonese staple is literally soul food to me. I also literally grew up on it as my childhood neighbour was a wanton mee seller who made his bamboo kneaded egg noodles from scratch at home every night. One of my best childhood memories was jumping and bouncing on that bamboo pole, but that's a story for another day.

Anyway, back to Ji Ji. I waited 30 minutes for my noodles this morning. Pro-tip: Avoid the lunch peak, if you can help it.

So, I finally made it to the front of the line.

The menu.

Ji Ji hasn't adjusted their prices for at least 5 years - amazing in today's market.

I ordered the signature and added braised chicken feet.

It's a semi automatic cashier system here - tell the cashier your order, and you will be given the price. Put your cash payment into the cash machine, which will return you your change.

Kristen the lady boss will prepare your order. Condiments like chili and utensils are self help.

My bowl of egg noodle invisible, blanketed under char siew slices, blanched greens, fried wanton and pork lard croutons.

I forgot to add the house made sambal chili to my bowl of noodles, which is just as well as I am then commenting on Ji Ji's original flavour version of wanton mee.

The relatively thick and heavy egg noodles were done tenderly crunchy al dente which is the way I like my noodles. Rigorous tossing and folding coated the strands with a savoury lardy sauce. Ji Ji's is not the drippy soupy type of sauce.

Next time, I shall remember the sambal chili and update this post.

The char siew (roast pork) slices were lean, cut quite thick but tender and moist and well infused with savoury sweet flavours from the marinate. It was a meaty and protein rich bowl 😁

Crispy freshly fried wantons.

Boss asked if I like lard, I replied "lots" 🤭

Freshly fried crunchy crisp oil and flavour saturated grenades.

A piece of heaven on earth.

I had shrimp dumplings in soup and a separate bowl of wantons (pork dumplings) in soup.

The soup tasted savoury with sweetness, both the porcine kind and from the gojiberries. It's a flavourful soup.

The wantons were relatively large, succulent, meaty with a blend of lean and fatty pork.

The shrimp dumplings were huge.

The pork and shrimp fillings were generous 👍

One of my favourite things at Ji Ji is their braised chicken feet. I have them as the side whenever I have Ji Ji's wanton noodle.

Not pretty but sweet savoury soft tender, fall-off-the-bone skin, tendon and collagen.

I finished everything. burp 🤣

Ji Ji Noodle Noodle is in the third generation now. Current owner Kristen Choong and Jill Choong's mum Lai Yau Kiew recalled:

"My mother was a Samsui woman and her job was nothing but tough physical labour. She started our family trade by chance when she came across a street stall for takeover."

That was at Synagogue Street in the 1950s.

The street side stall moved to South Canal Road area in the 60s where it was known as 山仔頂基記麺家.

Next move was in 1978 when Hong Lim Market & Food Centre opened and Ji JI has remained here since.
