✍️ 24 Sep 2025. Returned to Furong Chinese Roti Canai in Johor Jaya today - it's been 13 years since I stumbled upon this stall in 2012 (the first year of Johor Kaki blog).
Glad to see lady boss Ms 樑 still at the helm. Business as usual on this hot drowsy Tuesday morning with a steady flow of customers.
Furong coffeeshop is in the gritty, industrial part of Taman Johor Jaya with warehouses, wholesalers and car / bike repair shops. Most customers were folks who live or work around here.
I am a carb miser, so normally keep myself to one kosong i.e. one plain roti. But, today for the sake of tasting, added a roti bawang as well i.e. with onion filling.
The roti was thin and shaped like a folded handkerchief, not round. It looked relatively dry and didn't have that greasy sheen I often see in roti in other places (which scares me off 😱 ).
I love the leopard spots on Furong's roti. Like those found on good pizza cornicione.
I tried to eat the roti with fork and spoon, but quickly gave up. Fingers is the only way to tackle this.
The bread was crisp like biscuit but not as dry, layered and had a tender-firm QQ chewiness inside. It has the taste and smell of wheat flour, the kind you get when you bite into a fresh biscuit or tear open a soda biscuit's 苏打饼 plastic wrap.
The roti didn't have the grease that makes some of us instantly regret ordering it.
Ms 樑 said her dough was kneaded with flour and Planta (margarine), and fried with vegetable oil. Typical of Chinese style roti in Malaysia. (Typically, Malays make and fry their roti with margarine and Indians with ghee.)
The crisp chewy roti soaked up the orangey hued curry to perfect moistness.
The curry had vegetable sweetness, spice flavours and moderate spicy heat.
Besides curry, they also have sambal and dhal but I wasn't given, I didn't ask. Forgot 😅 🤷
I like roti with onion filling because I like the smell and sweetness of the juicy crunchy chopped fresh onion inside the crisp chewy folds softened slightly by moisture from the bulb.
Observing Ms 樑 while enjoying my kosong and bawang, I noticed that she dashes the egg prata with light soy sauce before folding it.
I never saw this quintessentially Chinese twist here or anywhere else before. I was was excited to try even though I have busted my carb quota for the day 😱
And so, I indulged myself with a third order, this time with egg and soy sauce 🤣
Egg in a tissue thin sac covered by a chewy layer, then a crispy outside. But, I couldn't discern the savoury taste of soy sauce in the roti. Nevertheless, it was an excellent roti telur as good as any I've tried before.
How much for everything? I gave the staff RM10, and got back some change which I stuffed unconsciously into my pocket without checking 😬
Still one of my favourite roti places in JB and Singapore. Come, if extra crisp and nearly grease free roti is your thing.

🔏 15 Aug 2012. Chinese roti prata (canai) stalls are rare in Johor. Restoran Furong 芙蓉华人煎饼 is the third Chinese roti prata shop that I have come across, so far.

The popular Furong Chinese roti prata shop 芙蓉华人煎饼 is run by a mother and daughter team for the past 16 years.
Notice how little oil there was on the pan?
The plain roti made with wheat flour and vegetable oil was thin and light, and there was hardly any grease, even on the plate. The roti was light, flakey and crispy, yet it was slightly moist and soft inside the folds. The roti was light tasting and it was gently sweet from the wheat flour.
The roti bawang was also crispy outside and was moist and soft inside with juicy sweet chopped fresh onions.
Furong serves three kinds of gravies for their prata. All are made from curry spices and vegetables, with no meat used. The curry potato sauce was the mildest - it tastes of potato sweetness and was not spicy. The spicy curry has a slight sting and was spicy hot - I like my gravy spicy hot.
The sambal chili was also nice. The sambal was sweet, salty and spicy hot. All the three sauces went very well with my roti.
Restoran Furong is an excellent place to have a Chinese roti prata.
