This morning I was food spotting around Johor Jaya Bakawali area, and stumbled upon Shyang Kopitiam.

More like re-stumbled upon 😄

I first met Shyang five years when his shop was one year old 👈 Before striking out on his own, Shyang worked 10 years at his dad's roti canai stall (Shyang's dad has since retired).

Five years on, Shyang Kopitiam is a popular place for breakfast and lunch for Bakawali folk.

My usual order at roti prata shops - a roti kosong (plain) and a roti bawang telur (filled with egg and onion).

The roti fried in vegetable oil on a flat iron griddle has a nice sear outside. The roti is light and slightly greasy but not too much. It has a light crisp to the bite with a bit of soft chewiness inside the folds. It tastes slightly sweet.

The egg in the folds softens the roti slightly but I like roti bawang telur because it has interesting layers of sweetness from the bread, egg and onion. The roti still has a bit of crisp on the outside.

Roti canai or prata is eaten by dipping the bread in a small dish of curry.

Shyang serves chicken curry. It is watery but has a nice sweet-spicy taste. It adds more sweetness to the bread with a bit of spiciness.

Nice!

Seeing the gentleman at the next table having a old school packet of nasi lemak, I couldn't stop helping myself to one. The rice has the right texture and moistness, the chili has a mild briefly lingering sting and the fish fried to a crisp was just slightly savoury.

Quite a nice packet of traditional nasi lemak.

I paid up RM5.80 for everything and got ready to leave.

On my way out, I saw Shyang making a roti filled with sardines and egg. I was curious about how it would taste and decided to order one for myself 😂 (price RM3.50.)

The canned sardines add their characteristic savoury taste to the sweetness of the roti and egg.

Try it, if you like sardines - I'll stick to kosong and bawang 😄

👉 Shyang Kopitiam is a good place for breakfast with crispy and sweet Chinese style roti canai (prata). If you like your roti and curry to be sweet, mildly spicy, this is for you 😄
