Bubur Nasi Istimewa No. 1 | 91, Jalan Sutera, Taman Sentosa, Johor Bahru, Malaysia  ☏ +6017 716 9699 ⏰ 6pm to 2am (closed on Mon & Tues)
Bubur Nasi Istimewa No.1 has been one of my favourite street side eating places in JB since my children were toddlers. We often had our dinner here after shopping at Lien Hoe Complex, then the hottest shopping hotspot in JB of the 1990s. Lien Hoe Complex is now Plaza Sentosa but the Jalan Sutera night time stalls and Bubur Nasi Istimewa No. 1 are still the same.

Bubur Nasi Istimewa No. 1 is the first few of about ten popular food stalls here along Jalan Sutera, diagonally across the road from Plaza Sentosa.

The stalls here open at 6:00pm and by 7:00pm the whole place would be bustling with diners. The building in the background is Plaza Sentosa. (You can't miss these stalls in front of the 7-11.) Parking is street side and can be challenging as this is a very popular area for night time casual eating.

The friendly staff has prepared everything and waiting for the first waves of customers to arrive.

Each set of Bubur Nasi Istimewa comes with a bowl of plain white porridge, spicy fried ikan bilis (anchovy) with onions, sambal kang kong, salted duck egg (half), fried peanuts, sambal, fried shredded coconut and preserved vegetables. (Pardon the poor quality picture due to challenging lighting at night.)

I have a better picture of the half salted duck egg, sambal, fried peanuts, preserved vegetables and fried shredded coconut :-D

The simple plain porridge freshly cooked at the stall has just the right texture. The friendly gentleman behind in the long sleeve shirt is the boss, Encik Ismail.

Among the little side dishes, I enjoyed the sambal kang kong the most. The sambal kang kong is cooked fresh at the stall.

I think the secret is in the sambal as it has well balanced mildly savoury, sour and spicy flavours.

We can also ordered ikan bakar, satay and roti jala, etc from the nearby stalls and enjoy them together with the bubur nasi or porridge.

The stingray was a small, juvenile one. The flesh and skin were very smooth and soft. The sambal was awesome. It's mildly savoury, sour and spicy with a smoky flavour from the charred banana leaf. It's actually among the best ikan bakar that I've tasted so far.

The sotong bakar was bouncy soft and cooked in the same delicious sambal laid on a banana leaf.

->> Experience JB street food at an institution (founded in 1987) long enjoyed by locals. Humble rice porridge with simple sides, yet it is so delicious and satisfying.
