Boneless BBQ Sambal Stingray at 999 Ikan Bakar at BR Coffee Shop in Permas Jaya Johor Bahru 新国花铁板烧鱼 JK1531
Stumbled upon this really good ikan bakar stall today at BR 新国花 coffee shop in Permas Jaya. I've been here at BR coffee shop a few times before but somehow missed this 999 Ikan Bakar stall. It's one of my favourite ikan bakar stalls in Malaysia and Singapore now. For lucky JB folks, this brilliant stall in Permas Jaya is so accessible 😄
999 Ikan Bakar is near the corner at BR coffee shop facing the main "court yard" in Permas Jaya with plenty of open air seating.
I ordered my usual, which is a slab of stingray with mixed vegetables. It came with the vegetables with lots of sambal chili heaped on top of the stingray on a browned banana leaf. This plate of grilled stingray and mixed vegetables costs RM25.
My first reaction when the dish arrived at our table was... eh.....? where is my fish? I was expecting to see the familiar bat wing shaped stingray I ordered.
This is where 999 Ikan Bakar is different.
At 999 Ikan Bakar, the grilled fish is served filleted - it is deboned and most of the skin is removed. Any doubts that I may have initially was blown away with the first bite.
The familiar stingray meat was more tender and more juicy than usual here. The white flesh was also sweeter. The sambal chili was spicy with some sourness and also sweetness from the stingray. The sambal's sting was quite sharp but it fades quickly and does not linger. There was very little oil in 999 Ikan Bakar's BBQ stingray.
We liked 999 Ikan Bakar's grilled stingray a lot.
Stall holder Pak Subandi hails from Surabaya, Indonesia. Pak Subandi and wife had been running their ikan bakar stall for over 13 years.
Pak Subandi goes the extra mile to fillet their fish before grilling.
All the bones and most of the skin are removed before the fillet are laid on fresh banana leaves to grill on a flat sizzling griddle.
When I asked him why he does so, Pak Subandi modestly replied "senang makan" or "easier to eat". Actually it's more than that, stingray is also more delicious without the bones and skin.
The juicy pieces of stingray grilled to medium doneness.
Pak Subandi then slathers his house made sambal chili liberally on the stingray.
We loved Pak Subandi's grilled stingray so much that we ordered also the sotong (squid) to try. This plate of grilled squid with mixed vegetables costs RM25.
Cooked to just the right doneness, the sweet squid rings were softly chewy to the bite and tasted spicy and sourish from the smothering sambal chili.
999 Ikan Bakar sells their grilled seafood by weight. The stingray, squid and vegetables we had today were very fresh.
Pak Subandi makes his own sambal chili from scratch.
The car park in front of BR coffee shop turns into a breezy al fresco "court yard" at night. There are a few good stalls here which I want to explore. The grilled tilapia stall which I blogged about in 2012 is still doing a thriving business. I want to try the stall again too.
👍 999 Ikan Bakar serves delicious fresh seafood, smothered with power packed sambal chili, expertly grilled and the fish is filleted so we taste only the sweet boneless and skinless flesh.

You should try the Penang style "lor mee" at this same coffee shop. It's better than many stalls in Penang.
ReplyDeleteOK thank you CK. Will go and visit soon. What is the opening time? Morning or evening?
DeleteEvening. The same store sells prawn mee and lor mee.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the tip. Appreciate much.
DeletePork satay, bbq skewers and bbq chicken wings are also good at this place!

ReplyDeleteMr Tony, I've tried this but I didn't quite enjoy it as much as you had.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to recommend the one at Taman Jurong if you're keen on finding something better as I believe you enjoy your chilli.
