Soon Soon Heng Bak Kut Teh 顺顺兴肉骨茶 | 43, Jalan Serigala, Taman Abad, Johor Bahru, Johor ⏰ 9am to 8pm (no fixed off day) |
My instinct is to look for underdogs (so-called "hidden gems") rather than already very popular places.
Passing by KSL City Mall again this morning, we finally checked into Soon Soon Heng for the first time.
We shared a pot of pork broth with pork ribs, pork belly and intestines. (I actually wanted pig tail as well but they were sold out.)
There are lots of other things like button mushroom, enoki mushroom, kidney, liver, stomach, pork ball, lean pork slices etc., we could add into the pot.
Soon Soon Heng's pork broth which came bubbling, steaming hot in a clay pot is mildly savoury with herbal hints. The clay pot keeps the broth piping hot which we like. It's not greasy and highly drinkable. The soup's flavour reminds me of Kulai's Sze Hwa bak kut teh broth.
If you are a pork lover like me, I think Soon Soon Heng's pork may hit the sweet spot for you too.
It meat was very fresh, tender with a bit of bite (i.e. neither mushy nor stiff), juicy and naturally sweet tasting.
Lovely.
The pork belly was sliced just the right thickness with skin, fat and lean meat in layers. Very fresh, cooked to just the right doneness with a tender spring to the bite. Nice porcine sweetness was released with every bite.
Sourish sweet salty crunchy pickled vegetables laced with lard grease and lard crackling (crouton).
Our total bill for bak kut teh with rice and one drink (barley water) came to RM43 (2016 price) - slightly higher than average pricing for JB bak kut teh.
👍I found Soon Soon Heng's BKT very likable because of the quality of their pork. If I am at KSL City Mall and want to eat BKT, I'll choose this shop.
