Popped over to Taman Jurong Market and Food Centre this sunny morning on my way for an appointment in Singapore's west. There are about 100 food stalls in this old 3-storey market cum hawker centre with 58 Minced Meat Noodles 五十八肉脞面 (bak chor mee) probably the most famous.
58 Minced Meat Noodles was founded in 1973. The stall holders looked young, so they are probably the second or third generation owners. There was no chance to speak with them as they were very busy.
I was there around 10:30am i.e. off peak. There was a constant queue,
though not a very long one. Waiting time was about 15 minutes.
This, the largest serving with a bowl of soup, costs SGD3.50 which I feel is very reasonable (2016 price).
There was plenty of fiery looking sauce in the bowl (I asked for chili). Enough to wet and envelope the huge mound of noodles with flavours. The sauce is a blend of well balanced robust savoury and spicy flavours - not too spicy, just a gentle tingling zing.
(There were bottles of black vinegar at the stall and customers can help themselves to as much as they like. I didn't add any. Yes, I can hear the howls of bak chor mee purists 😱 I don't like sour things 😅 )
The generic mee pok (yellow ribbon noodles) was done slightly softer than soft al dente. Though it lacked that soft crunch, I still enjoyed the noodles as the sauce was so flavoursome 😋 There is enough lard in there, so all is forgiven 😛 Anyway, this is bak chor mee not spaghetti, wanton mee or ramen, so al dente or lack of it is not really a criteria, yes? no?
The minced lean meat and pork fat, thin slices of lean pork and liver were all done just right. Tender with its natural porcine flavours still intact. Crispy bits of pork lard cracklings added more crunch as well as porky flavour and aroma. The spongy shiitake mushroom and button mushroom stewed in savoury sauce gave the noodles an added layer of savouriness.
The clear watery soup was very mildly savoury sweet with a nice porky sweetness. I wished there was more of this tasty soup to help me wash down the huge mound of noodles 😛
3-Star I love bak chor mee with robust flavours, so I like Taman Jurong's 58 Minced Pork Noodles' bak chor mee. It's very good value for the quality and amount of food we are getting. My top choice for bak chor mee around Singapore's west.
I am curious - there are a few 58 Minced Meat Noodles around Singapore, from Jurong to Changi. There's also one right opposite at Taman Jurong Shopping Centre. Are they related? How? Please share in the comments, if you know. Appreciate much 😊

you should try the roast meat on the floor above. Long queues and generally sold out before 1230pm on weekday

DeleteAgree that this is one of the best BCM in the West. But another stall with even longer wait time is Ng Kee Teochew Fishball Kway Teow Mee. Under radar for long time. No visible queues as they serve the food to you but be prepared to WAIT. Managed to eat there only once in my 4 years working nearby.
