Paid a visit to an old favourite, Xi Xiang Feng yong tau foo at Ang Mo Kio central's Blk 724 food centre.

You see, I used to live in this Ang Mo Kio flat from the mid-70s to the mid-80s. I remember the street in front was a muddy bumpy gravel road in the 1970s. Some of the grand old trees are still lining the street here.

AMK Blk 724 market and food centre has been refurbished several times in the past 3 decades, but it is still in the same spot.

The best thing is, a few of the original stalls are still here after all these years.

AMK Blk 724 food centre is busy as ever because of it's central location and also because there are many good food stalls here.

Once you arrive at Xi Xiang Feng stall, go straight to the shelves of yong tau foo pieces. There are all kinds from fried, boiled to raw pieces. Pick your favourites and hand it over to the friendly lady taking orders.

This was my first time back at Xi Xiang Feng after 30 years.

After ordering, move back and join the queue. On this Thursday morning, I waited 30 minutes for my food πŸ˜ƒ It's worth every minute.

My usual order of curry laksa chor bee hoon (thick rice vermicelli) with a bowl of yong tau foo and soup at the side.

This came to SGD6.50 which I feel is good value for money.

Xi Xiang Feng's curry laksa is among the top 3 best in Singapore, in my opinion. Just by the looks of it, one knows that this is a laksa heavyweight.

The ingredients are simple - just a few strips of fish cake, tau pok, one fresh shrimp but as long as there are fresh blood cockles.... I am happy.

Xi Xiang Feng's laksa is all about their curry broth, which is overloaded with liao ζ–™ (ingredients).

You can feel the soft yet rough grittiness of the dried shrimps and taste their savoury sweetness. Then, there is heavy coconut milk teasingly close to cloying sweetness but never crossing the line. The chili in the blend packs a sting and makes it's presence felt on my tongue and lips. The savoury sweet spicy flavours were in harmonious balance.

It's a no holds barred curry laksa broth complete with greasy slick on top. Don't touch, if you are on any sort of diet.

Because, after that.

The head says no, but the heart won't listen.

I drank the curry laksa broth to the last drop πŸ˜…

The yong tau foo is much saner... I almost forgot that Xi Xiang Feng is foremost a yong tau foo stall πŸ˜‚

Most of the yong tau foo pieces are generic at Xi Xiang Feng but it has more varieties than average Singapore YTF stalls. I have some favourites like the gummy springy giu her (cuttlefish) and chewy savoury bitter fried tau pueh.

The fillings are generic - fish paste with bulk filler. But, the vegetables were very fresh, done just right with plenty of juicy crunch.

The yong tau foo pieces were served in a light cloudy broth that is heavy with natural sweetness from soy beans and stock bones.

The spicy dip is mildly hot with savouriness and a toasty taste. The sweet dip has an old school slight fermented soy bean taste.

4-Star (out of 5). Xi Xiang Feng serves one of the best yong tau foo in Singapore. But, their kick ass curry laksa is what will bring me back πŸ˜ƒ

    the laksa sure looks inviting.
    Out of curiosity, did you eat the laksa followed by YTF?
    Wouldn't that stand to dull the taste of YTF?

  2. Thanks Sam, yes it does :-D Bad old habits - at this stall I love their laksa and habitually have the YTF as a side (because I don't want to put all the YTF pieces into the laksa broth). Yes, you are right. Next time, I should do a post focussing on the YTF instead :-D
