Best Vegetarian Restaurants in Singapore. Miao Yi in People's Park Centre 妙益素食楼

We met for lunch today at Miao Yi 妙益, one of the longest established and famous vegetarian restaurants in Singapore. Founded in 1991, the founder still heads the kitchen, ensuring the standards which Miao Yi is famous for, stay the same. This was my first time at Miao Yi and I love it.

Three days to Chinese New Year, we launched our lunch with a customary lou hei yee sang - the vegetarian edition, of course (price $30++).

The julienned vegetables were nicely cut, moist but not wet. The sauce was sweet but not sugary. It's a nice rendition of the iconic Chinese New Year tradition.

鸿运乳猪 Fortune Mock Suckling Pig (price $40++. Note: all prices quoted are for small servings).

Miao Yi is famous for their signature crispy "suckling pig". The suckling pig is a stack of thin bean curd sheets on a mushroom base - the outside layer crisp and inside layers moist and more chewy.

It's eaten with a stick of crunchy cucumber and a dab of savoury sweet bean sauce wrapped with a leaf of lettuce.

It's quite novel and very popular.

龙凤呈祥 Creamy Shark’s Fin Soup (price $16++).

This is one shark fin soup anyone can enjoy. Made with julienned bean curd skin and mushrooms, the thick heavy soup has the textures and flavours close to real thing.

No sharks were killed or harmed to make this vegetarian dish.

Delicious.

爆炒螺肉 Fried Oyster Meat (price $16++).

Neither look nor taste like oysters but this was delicious. The spongy springy mushrooms stir fried with bean paste and dried chili peppers tasted savoury with spicy notes. I enjoyed this dish.

Didn't get the name of this dish. It is straight braised mushrooms on a green bed of blanched broccoli.

What you see is what you get. Thick spongy black mushroom saturated with mild savoury sauce that complemented the mushroom's natural savoury flavour.

咖喱鱼头 Mock Curry Fish Head (price $15++).

The curry was thick, creamy and mainly sweet with underlying mild spice flavours.

糖醋排骨 Sweet And Sour Spare Rib (price $15++).

I like this. The soft inside consists of mushroom and seaweed. It has a nice savoury taste and interesting soft crunch. The outside was a crispy shell of thin batter.

I ate 3 or 4 of these. Nice.

Go ahead. Order this hor fun. The kway teow noodles had good toasty wok hei (something we can't take for granted in Singapore, nowadays).

Miao Yi is a relatively large restaurant with many big round tables - it's a restaurant set up for families and gatherings. It was full house during lunch with several groups holding celebrations. I took this picture during the afternoon break when the restaurant was closed.

When people ask me to recommend a vegetarian restaurant in Singapore. Miao Yi would be at the top of my mind.

Thank you Jason and Wendy for your hospitality.
