Visited the newest Chicky Fun outlet at Bagus (Halal) food court in the sprawling, spanking new Northpoint City mall in Yishun, Singapore today. The Halal Singapore chicken rice was delicious ๐
The Chicky Fun chain is owned by the KOPITIAM group and its day to day operations are overseen by SGT Kiang.
SGT Kang is a legend in the world of Singapore chicken rice. When SGT Kiang was running a Singapore Army cookhouse, he was drafted into the Mandarin Hotel opening team in 1971. He was part of the Mandarin Hotel team responsible for the renowned Chatterbox Chicken Rice which more than any others put Singapore chicken rice on the world map.
Supported by his sons and daughter Susan (not in picture), SGT Kiang ensures that the operations of Chicky Fun outlets are smooth like their famous chicken.
This Northpoint City outlet is Chicky Fun number 32, and more are in the pipeline.
Located in BAGUS food court, Chicky Fun operates as a "mini restaurant" with a more extensive menu which includes congee, noodles, hor fun, soups, nasi lemak, and even Nyonya style favourites like mee siam, lobster & crayfish laksa, etc. The food is also served in restaurant quality cutlery and utensils.
At Chicky Fun, half a bird costs $16.
The chicken was cooked through (there was no pink at all) yet the meat was smooth, tender and juicy.
The boneless chicken cut into bite size pieces was splashed with a soupy aromatic sauce that tasted mildly savoury sweet. Raymond said the sauce is made with chicken stock and 13 other ingredients.
The dressing was tasty and it was gentle enough for me to taste the chicken meat's natural chicky sweetness.
The boiled chicken gizzard and liver were nice too, cooked to just the right doneness, each with their own texture and flavour.
Chicky Fun's sauces are winners.
Chicky Fun's chili sauce hits the tongue with a hot sting that comes in waves of increasing intensity, and lingers pleasantly in the mouth for a while. It is made with 3 types of chili peppers including "ghost" chili from India which is certified by Guinness World Records as the world's hottest chili pepper - 400 times hotter than Tabasco pepper - don't play play ๐ฑ
The ginger dip delivers a milder, gentle kind of spiciness. The soft grainy ground fresh ginger is held together with aromatic oil.
Chicky Fun's aromatic rice was good too. Just the right moistness and soft-tender nutty feel to the bite with gentle chicken stock flavour. Not greasy. Studded with corn which gave the rice accents of sweetness. Though, personally I prefer my rice the old way, without the corn ๐
The bowl of clear soup was savoury with added crunch and sweetness from the shredded cabbage and chopped scallion. Fried shallots provided another layer of flavour.
Chicky Fun serves 1-person set ($6) and 2-person set ($12) which are reminiscent of Mandarin Hotel's Chatterbox chicken rice. I feel it is great value.
Chicky Fun has the deep fried (referred to as "roast") version of chicken too.
Not as tender, smooth or juicy as "white" chicken but has more chew to the bite. Very little or no natural chicky taste but more savoury flavour. Roast is the preferred choice of many people, though I personally like "white" better.
Oyster Sauce Vegetable $5. Fresh, well washed, nicely cut and done so it is crunchy and juicy.
Besides, the traditional Singapore chicken rice, Chicky Fun offers other dishes, running the food court stall as a "mini restaurant".
Mee Siam $4.00.
Laksa with crayfish and lobster $24.00.
๐ Chicky Fun at Northpoint City serves a delicious taste of nostalgia at an easily accessible location, in a nice comfortable bright setting and at a good value price.
