Just the other day, a friend declared on Facebook that steaks in Johor Bahru CMI i.e. Singlish for "cannot make it". I politely responded with a couple of recommendations for her to try. Today, after tasting the steaks at Fat Butchery (in Taman Melody near KSL Mall), I can add another good place for steaks in JB ๐
But, Fat Butchery is not a steakhouse - it's like more like the wet market section of a premium supermarket, with a difference ๐
Jackson (left) and Sean set up Fat Butchery to supply the public and F & B businesses with premium fresh seafood, meats, poultry and vegetables. At Fat Butchery, customers have the option to request the kitchen to cook the food for them (at additional cost of between RM25 to RM50 depending on the dish). They can even sous vide for you, if you call them ahead ☎ +6013 200 4030.
Fat Butchery has a small selection of wines to pair with your food either taking home to cook yourself or dining in at the butchery. Jackson and Sean are experts in wine and food pairing.
There's no menu at Fat Butchery. We just pick and choose our produce from the display chillers like in a supermarket and then hand it over to the kitchen to prepare and cook. Today, we tasted Japan Miyazaki A3 Wagyu Sirloin and Australian Rangers Valley BMS 5 Angus Sirloin.
Sean started us off with a simple salad - a heap of greens and cherry tomatoes from the vegetable section simply dressed with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
The fresh greens were crisp, crunchy and juicy. It even had a nice subtle nutty taste. Savoury tangy balsamic vinegar always does wonders to whet our appetites and gets us salivating - never fails to bring out the carnivore in us.
The cherry tomatoes were filled with zesty natural sweet juice. They were quite addictive, making me felt like a kid eagerly gobbling up colourful candy that pop and burst sweet juices.
First up was the grilled Australian Rangers Valley BMS5 "Black Market" Angus Sirloin served with salad with mango sauce dressing, a Portobello mushroom, mustard and sea salt.
This 260 gram Angus sirloin cost RM125 nett dining in.
The sirloin was grilled to medium doneness. The meat had a nice tender juicy bite. The steak tasted mildly savoury with underlying beefiness and natural sweetness. There was also a slight toasty taste from the lightly seared outside. I love this steak.
I am a big fan of Portobello mushroom, so I was very glad that it came with the steak.
The big mushroom's spongy mouthfeel and savoury juiciness was so good. Its savouriness tasted almost like a delicate meat (which of course it wasn't). Love it.
Next up was the Japan A3 Miyazaki Wagyu Sirloin. The grilled steak came with spears of asparagus, a salad, mustard and pinches of sea salt.
This grilled 260 gram Japan A3 Miyazaki Sirloin cost RM260 nett.
I mistakenly cut the steak across the grain ๐ The steak was done medium.
Despite me cutting it cross grain by mistake, the steak was extremely tender and juicy. With every bite, the tender meat released warm savoury sweet juices that tasted like melted butter.
Crunchy, tender, juicy, sweet asparagus all the way from Peru to JB.
I tried hard to answer Sean's question about which was my preferred steak. I tasted the Aussie and the Japanese, switching back and forth between bites of Angus and Wagyu. In all honesty, I couldn't decide between the two. I love the Angus' subtly squeaky tender bite and the Wagyu's buttery almost liquid tenderness. The Angus' beefiness was hard to resist and the Wagyu's sweet savoury buttery juices was just too seductive.
Fortunately, loving both of them breaks no rules ๐
๐ With Fat Butchery in Taman Melody, there's one more place for good steak in Johor Bahru. Fat Butchery is also a good place in JB to get premium meats, seafood and vegetables for your home. Next time, I shall try the other produce like Iberico pork at Fat Butchery.
