First stop across the Causeway today, Kin Wah coffee shop at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee for a quick caffeine fix.
She bought a pack of six pieces of chwee kueh. My first reaction was, "Alamak, it's all carbs. This is our first stop. We cannot afford to squander tummy space like this leh.... 🤔 ".
Took one bite. It changed my mind straightaway.
The warm steamed rice cake was dense but soft tender. It's a creamy type of softness like firm custard. It was completely rice flour or at least a very high proportion of it.
There was a subtle rice sweetness which I like.
The chye poh was the sweet type, diced and stewed in vegetable oil (no pork). The chye poh bits were soft, subtly crunchy, sweet, savoury and slightly tangy.
It was the perfect complement for the soft, sweet rice cake.
Then, there's chili sauce, dark soy sauce and a sweet bean sauce. Squeezed into the plastic box and blended together with the chye poh, we got a complex stack of flavours from humble ingredients.
This chwee kueh stall at Kin Wah kopitiam is run by two Yue siblings (brother and sister). Another pair of siblings run another stall at Taman Ungku Tun Aminah. The stall was founded in 1985 at Pasar Kia at Sungai Segget river.
The family makes the chwee kueh and yam cake. Chee cheong fun is from supplier.
After tasting Pasar Kia chwee kueh, I have renewed respect for this delicious humble staple.
