Hong Wen Mutton Soup Maxwell • Original 50 Year Old Beauty World Icon 紅炆羊肉湯

Old Beauty World Hong Wen Mutton Soup 紅炆羊肉湯 | 1 Kadayanallur Street, stall #01-25, Singapore 069184 (Maxwell Food Centre) 🚅 At Maxwell station ⏰ 9:30am - 7:30pm (Sat & Sun off)

Stumbled upon Hong Wen Mutton Soup stall at Maxwell Food Centre. I know Hong Wen as it was one of the top of my mind Chinese mutton soup stalls in Singapore since the 1980s.

Eh... But Hong Wen Mutton Soup seemed a bit out of place here in the CBD 🤔 - the stall is an Upper Bukit Timah / Beauty World icon.

So I asked the stall holder.

阿贵 was running the Hong Wen Mutton Soup stall at Bukit Timah hawker centre but moved here in Maxwell since Sep 2024 when the former was demolished for redevelopment.

His younger brother 阿財 is still running the Hong Wen Mutton Soup stall at level 4 of Beauty World Shopping Centre

阿贵 has the option to move back to Upper Bukit Timah once the new hawker centre is ready in a few years time.

Hong Wen Mutton Soup was started by their father in Upper Bukit Timah Seven Mile / Beauty World in the 1970s. 阿贵 worked with his father since he was a teen.

I got the S$6.50 serving. It's very good value in today's market in the heart of Singapore's Central Business District.

Option of topping up S$2-3 for more meat.

Nevermind, I am a small eater.

The soup was light brown in colour, soupy, slightly viscous, not overly greasy. The sweetness of gojiberry was pronounced, followed by mild Chinese herbs and savouriness. There was very little, if any lamb gaminess (which is good news for many people, I know). Overall, a highly drinkable soup with well balanced flavours.

Lots of ginger and Chinese parsley which neutralise what very little gaminess there was.

Meat and fat were fall-off-the-bone soft-tender. Soft and juicy to the bite.

Gently herbal, sweet, savoury, gamey taste.

Soft lamb stomach.

I forgot to take a picture but the house made orangey-red chili sauce was good - fresh sharp spicy hot chili balanced with sourish lime and a touch of saltiness.

Delicious Chinese style mutton soup. I didn't leave a single drop of soup 🤭

  5. Tony Boey I found the soup rather light compared to other mutton soup stalls like the one in Old Airport Road, and the other in Bukit Merah View Food Centre. I also didn't get very much meat. Maybe he was in a bad mood that day?
